Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) Exhaust Brake

This afternoon my check engine light came on.

I checked the codes by turning the key on and off and got a 1693.

That was the only code that shows there.

I got out my code scanner and it shows no active codes but a pending code of 0216

I only have 25,500 miles on the truck. The entire fuel system was upgraded at 12,00 miles.

I didn't get on the go pedal to see how it responds with the light on but up until the light came on the truck had run great.

The only thing that I have noticed is that when I first start it in the morning the idle with surge 50-100 rpm when cold. once warm this goes away.

I do have BD4's and a Drag Comp but the Comp sits on level 3 almost all the time.

Any ideas or help would be great. I hate to think about spending $1500 on a new VP44.

I had the codes cleared today and the light went out.

Within about 45 minutes of driving time the light was back on.

The dash is showing the P1693 again. I have not checked the scanner to see if it is showing the other again.

The truck is running great. You can stand on the gas as much as you like and everything is good.

Any ideas ?

Just went through the same deal with mine. Probably crank position or camshaft position sensor. Dealer said not under warranty, over 60,000 miles. Good Luck

Bob,

Thanks for the reply.

I am not sure what the dealer will or will not do for me since my pump wire is tapped.

I figure very little anywere on the truck.

I just need to figure it out and take care of it.

thanks again

Bill

If the injection pump is going out wouldnt the truck lose some power or performance? Be hard to start? have something other than a check engine light with a code?

The truck runs great. no performance issues at all.

I am going to put a pump tester on it as soon as I can get a hold of one.

Bob,

Thanks for the link.

I had already read through almost all of those.

For reading that I know it is a good possibility that the Vp44 is going but with less that 26k miles and no drive-ability issues it seems strange.

The P0216 code only shows up if I use a scanner. It does not show on the dash like the P1693 code does.

Who has the best price on the VP44?

Bill

i had a p1693 code show up a few months ago and the cummins dealer found that it is a communication problem between the cummins and chrysler computers. i had a cam sensor go bad when this code popped up. i changed the cam sensor and the p1693 code has not come back on now for three months. 2001 2500 4x4 54,000 miles. good luck on the pump issue!
