Hey,, when ever I come out of cruise control my trottle cable pops off the ball. This happened before and I replaced the throttle cable and it was fine for awhile. Now it's doing it again.

I think the ball is worn out so I tried to get a new lever which the ball is mounted on and there is none anywhere to be found. Back ordered till hell freezes over.

The part number is 4897406AA.

Has anyone had this problem?

What did you do to fix it?

I was thinking of heating it up and appling some braze to it to make it a little larger. Smooth it up and see if it works.

Thanks,

I just took this from the DTR, it appears that the throttle cable is the part number that they gave you.

See if the recall kit mentioned in this cut and paste is still available as it has new ball studs with it in addition to the throttle cable itself.

If that kit is no longer available let me know and I will see if I can score you a Cummins Part Number for them.

Thanks to Timmy2202!!!!

Ok boys, here's the lowdown on the throttle cable recall on the 94-96 CTD...

I needed the recall done but I was dead set against having them do it, even for free!

So, I called the dealer and asked if I could just buy the parts for the recall. There response was the same as above "we have to install the parts, you'll have to bring the truck in".

After a while, I did a few internet searches and found a bunch of info on the (recall #970). I then found the part # for the cable itself (4897406AA) I called the dealer and it had to be ordered for $47. 85

I then did a little more looking and found a part # that was the whole recall kit that the service department uses for the recall. So, I call back the parts counter and say "I'm looking for part # CANZ9700".

Now get this, this part # CANZ9700 contains not only the cable #4897406AA (that was $47. 85) but it also contains 3 throttle rod ball studs, ball sockets, nuts and the return spring! now heres the killer...

The part # CANZ9700 with the cable and everthing was only $19. 00 and it was in stock! so I hurried my arse down to the dealer before they figured out what I was doing and bought the whole shabang for $19. 00

The only thing I can think of is the parts counter is supposed to sell the kit to the service department for $19. 00?

So, before they figure out whats going on, If you are like me and want to install it yourself get the kit and do it yourself. By the way I already installed the cable so it is the right one!

I checked out the CANZ9700 and it's on backorder too. The price if they had it was only $16. 95:). I think I'll shade tree it and coat it with braze and go on.

Thanks,

Cummins Part Number 3923158.

It is too late for me to call and get a factory inquiry.

Call your local Cummins distributor if they are still open. Only about $11. 00 if you can score one.

If it is too late for you to call tonight I will check Monday morning for you.

Mike. :)

Mike, you are correct it is #16.

Thanks,

I have a CANZ9700 kit. PM your address to me and I'll drop a fitting into the mail. It has a ball on one end, is threaded and has a flat connector for the CC cable, which I believe is the one you need. You could post a pic to make sure.

Is the little throttle ball welded or riveted on? If so, can you drill it out and install a bolt on? ACE Hardware has the bolt on in several sizes.

Hi all, thanks for all the input here is a photo of the lever. I should have looked more closely one side is the throttle and the other is the cruise control. Replacing th ball is not an option.

Gary, does the lever look like this one in your CANZ9700 kit?

I have the ball/cc piece. Under the flat side (cc)is a bolt head, 10mm. I've never had mine apart, but if this is the replacement the piece should thread out of the lever.

edit; I'll go see if there is a nut that fits the threads. Perhaps you drill out the old ball, then install this in the hole.

edit#2; The nuts in the kit only fit the throttle rod balls. It shouldn't be too hard to find a nut for the part you need.

edit#3 LOL; I looked up what the parts kit should have, went back to the garage and found the nut. According to the inventory, it is the throttle cable ball stud. Go sto step 26 http://dodgeram.info/tsb/recalls/970/repair.htm
