The throttle cable recall #970 notices are in the mail. Got mine today. My cable has a few broken strands and it was replaced once before.

Has anyone ever owned a vehicle with more recalls than the Ram?

W'ont idle down

Well I guess it is happening to my 3500.

While on vacation last week I noticed my engine would not Idle down below 1100 rpm unless I allowed my foot to slip off the diesel pedal. When the idle would return to normal the pedal would seem like it was stuck and needed a little more effort to depress it.

Any answers will be appreciated.

Thanks Tim

i too got my cable recall notice today... my existing cable looks to be in perfect shape so my question is if there is a recognizable difference between the o. e. m cable being replaced and the new replacement cable. the original ower of my vehicle may have had the cable replaced already and if so then i will just hold on to the recall notice. does anyone know what to look for in the two cables? thanks in advance.....

The older, original cable (on my 95) had about 4 to 5 inches of exposed twisted strand cable near the end. The snap on ball type connector (to the throttle linkage itself) was pressed to this wire cable. This was prone to fraying. Mine was almost to the point of breaking when I replaced it myself. About a year later (~ 2 years ago), a dealer replaced that cable with one that had no exposed wire, saying it was the new updated version. This one is sheathed in plastic all the way to the ball type connector. Other than the cable, not sure what else in the linkage DC plans to check and replace. May just have a dealer look at it before scheduling anything.

Regarding stuck throttle pedal, a frayed throttle cable could cause the symptom described, as also could corrosion and dirt built up in the linkage itself. There is a throttle return/tensioning spring which sits under the P7100 to the rear, which if broken, would make your truck almost undrivable. Happened to me about 20 miles from home and barely made it back. Carry a spare now.

Regarding the number of recalls, owned a 92 Explorer that had a bunch.

 H_LL NO

I have a 95 with the original cable. The problem I had one day was the snap on ball type connector come off so I use a wire tie to reconnect it. It's still on there. That's been 3 years ago.

I just lubed my throttle linkage joints last week. They were, in fact, binding. There was some corrosion. I called my dealer and offered to do the install if they gave me the parts. :)

Three years ago, after reading about the fraying throttle cable in the TDR mag. , I checked mine and had it replaced by the dealer (warranty item).

how would that work for me? i bought my truck about 7 to 8 months ago. will i get the notice or would he? and is my truck included in the recall being it is a 97? still kinda new to this.

TStetson,

My recall notice says '94-'96. Wouldn't hurt to try, tho. In any case, check your throttle cable end and if your cable is sheathed in plastic, it should be ok. I would check your throttle linkage ball joints and lube them if necessary.

TStetson: Check with Dodge Corp. to make sure they have you as the owner. Then you will get all future recall notices.

All recalls are done by VIN number. Check with your local Dealer and they will check your VIN thru their computer and tell you about this and all previous recalls that were or were not done. They don't care who owns the truck. They are required to do the recall by the Feds.

Am I missing something here? I've NEVER yet had a recall of any kind on my 97. Should I have? I've had it since it was new. (By the way, the throttle cable on it is fine, it's original, with 132,000 on it. )

Dennis: As far as I know, the only accurate way to check on recalls is to have a dealer check their computer. If you are not the original owner, DC may not have your address and you would not get notified.

So far my recalls are:

steering shaft

fan/ac key switch wiring

trailer hitch wiring

throttle cable

I think there were a couple others, but I'm a bit fuzzy tonight. Hood latch and vacuum pump check valve come to mind.

Dodge must keep track of who owns the rigs though the VIN numbers in co-operation with the licensing folks or something. All I know is that I've received recall notices on used rigs that have never seen a dealer since I've owned them and I've never contacted Dodge personnaly.

Recall

I got the recall notice in the mail today. Mine has allready been replaced so I am sending the invoice to the listed address for reinbursment. Hope is does not take as long to get "reinbursed" as it did to get the notice.

Got mine today. My first Ram was a 94 1500- Bought in January of 94. It was recalled more than 12 times within the first 6 months. I just waited until I had enough of them and then would let the dealer fix three of four at once!!

At least DC is willing to do the recalls.

Perfect timing. Just as it started giving me trouble.

Got my notice Tuesday. The dealer says they have the parts in stock.

I have part receipts for throttle cable, Speed control cable, and throttle linkage. The kicker is the good folks at the 5* dealer thought I had a sticky pump and spent 2 days to take off the pump and have it bench tested only to figure out that it was a sticky linkage. I have a bill for $190 to lube a sticky linkage. Two days after they lubed it, it bound up and broke the press on ball joint at the pump. I can't wait to get all my money back. ITs a $300 reimbursement!

PS When I got my truck back it wasn't washed, there was a clamp left off an intercooler hose, there was a shop rag left in the engine compartment, the speed control cable was left disconnected and grease footprints were left on the floor mat and carpet. All courtesy of your local 5* dealer.

Where do you guys find these dealers? If a vehicle came out of the shop from the dealer in Eureka in that kind of shape I think the owner would shoot the culprits! The guys at Northcoast Auto do a good job quickly. The only problem we run into here is that it takes a few days to get parts sometimes. Never any dirt or grease in the vehicle. If the job is over $40 the vehicle is washed and vacuumed. It's hard to beat these guys.

I've been checking my cable every week for about six weeks, since I found one broken strand. Well today I look and it's totally shredded. Maybe a few strands left. I'm scheduled for the recall replacement next week so I'm not driving the truck till then and hoping I can drive 30 miles to the dealer. I'm amazed at how fast this cable can self destruct. It must have almost no safety factor built in!

Joe G: I feel lucky to get my truck back from the dealer with no dents and all the parts put back in the right place. Dealer washing the truck? You must be kidding. They don't even wipe off their own hand prints. On the other hand the dealer's lack of quality control has given me a number of nice tools over the years. You would think that the service manager would at least look at the vehicles they service.
