Decided to check to see where the missing spring connected & checked WOT. With the pedal to the floor, you can go in by hand & get another 1/2" of travel out of the linkage. If you reach back to the back side of the pump & twist the linkage that pivots in the middle, I still have 1/2" of travel in the bar.

I then loosened the adjusters in the 'kinked' bar & took out the slack. Now idle is way high. :mad: I just adjusted it back the way it was.

It doesn't seem right. Shouldn't pedal to the floor take out all the slack in the linkage?

You have something wrong. The linkage adjustment should have no affect on the idle. That is set with the adjustment screw on the back of the pump. One thing you might want to check is the two screws that fasten the linkage to the pump lever at the rear. These can get loose. If they fall out it can get exciting in a hurry. You need an 8mm box end wrench to tighten them.

When I started it Joe, it was wanting to run real fast. I shut it off & loosened the 2 nuts & turned the adjuster so as to lengthen the rod again. Started it, high idle & while it was running, adjusted it so the idle was normal. The 1st adjustment to take the slack out was basically like adjusting it @ partial throttle.

Nothing is easy. :eek:

Thanks

At WOT the pump lever should be against the high idle stop (no slack). That screw is on the back of the pump and you really can't normally get to it because of a "tamper proof" cover. At idle the pump lever should be against the normal idle stop. That's the adjustable screw on the back of the pump with the lock nut. If yours does not do this then something is wrong. The loose screws I mentioned before might be a cause. Another thing that happens is that the throttle rod gets installed backwards. The straight end parts should be parallel to the engine.

idle curosity

Forrest;

I'm curious, did you have a throttle cable replacement lately? I had my 96 at Dodgem, they told me about a cable recall. Upon my surprise, they did replace it. BUT, I had all this slack in my pedal now. I fixed it by raising the fuel pedal on the floor as high as it would go, stretching the cable inside, then putting on a very small wire rope cable clamp on very tight. Now I have full travel on my pedal, with room to go to the floor. It may not be very professional but the results are proven. Check it inside.

Wayne - Not recently. It was replaced a couple yrs ago when the original frayed. I always had the 'bucking' & then after the linkage kit was installed by Dodge, the 'bucking' went away & the pedal pressure was a bunch more.

Recently, the pedal pressure got real 'light', or lighter anyway. Now the bucking is back. :mad:

I cut a 1. 5" dowel to put between the pedal & the steering wheel for WOT. With the pedal @ WOT, I checked to see if there was any more travel available in the linkage @ the front of the pump. There isn't any more travel there. However, if I reach to the back of the linkage, to the linkage piece that pivots in the middle, there is another 1/2" of travel available. I verified with Keith that the 2 springs @ the bottom of that piece of linkage is in tact & working. Both springs are attached & are working together.

It sure seems that @ WOT, all members of the linkage should be all the way on, but nada.

linkage

Forrest;

I'm curious. Did you read what you wrote? Before the replacement, bucking after, it stopped. Now its back, curious, but related? The end of the cable could be stretched or the crimped end could have slipped? One more possibility, The spring at the top of the accelerator pedal, could have broken?

I may be all wet, but its worth an inspection. Besides hanging upside down under the dash is good for the blood flow to the brain, and a chance for extra brain waves?

Well, the order isn't related, but before the linkage kit was put on it bucked & the linkage kit stopped the bucking. As a matter of fact, the pedal pressure increased a bunch with the new linkage kit.

I was checking the play @ the top of the accelerator pedal earlier & didn't notice a spring!

I have a 96 also and I did the same thing with the cable stop. What's the deal with that??

Does your truck have an auto trans? If it does check to see if the spring on the TV valve lever is still there. If it breaks your throttle will be real light.
