Kind of a dumb question, but I put in my 3K GSK this last weekend and in the process, i nocked off the single throttle linkage spring that has the small plastic swivel on one end towards the front of the pump. I could not find the particular place where it hooks and now the throttle seems a little bit softer now too. Does anyone have a diagram or picture of the vicinity so I can see where it hooks. Also just wondering if my results seem ok with my new mods. I can hit about 1250*-1300* on a grade, but i don't keep it there very long plus I get about 36 psi. No smoke. Any longevity issues? Anyhow it is a lot more fun to drive. :) Thanks in advance.

Hello JHastings:

Got the same broken spring on mine - I was searching hoping to find help, too. My throttle is funny, sticks high, cause the spring doens't give as much return pressure now. I can at least tell you to look directly in a line toward the radiator or firewall, and you should see another small plastic swivel - there are two of them ! But I can't tell if the spring connected them together, or if they 'anchored' separately. We need a diagram or layout schematic to tell, eh ? I'll keep searching... . wish you well !

There is a little bracket on the block just a little behind the power steering pump on my '95. The front of the spring hooks to it. The rear of the spring hooks to a lever on the injection pump six or seven inches toward the firewall from there. The spring is actually two springs wound together so there are two wires in the hook on each end. If one of them has broken or rusted off it will too easy to push the pedal and it will tend to stick. Idle will be where ever the crazy thing decides to stop. This is the way it is on my '95. Later trucks may be different because the spring has been a PITA for a long time. Also, since you don't have a vacuum brake booster the end of the power steering pump may not be in exactly the same place.

Come to the SoCal rr wrench day in Menifee on the 22 and I will bring a spring and show you where it goes.

Bob

Thank you Joe G. for the help. I'll look harder now to find how similar my '97 is to your '95 - and employ a fix. That should give me this week to deal with it, and just maybe I can see Bob 4by4 in Menifee next Saturday.

That would be nice of you, Bob ! I'll try to get off work Saturday so I can attend. I presume details are listed elsewhere under events for our region - I hope to see you there !

Best to you both, David B

At the bottom of this page there is a picture showing the single spring at the front of the pump. It seams like an odd place for the spring to hook at the back end but that's it. I had the same question on mine once when I had the spring off and looked it up in my '98 service manual and sure enough that's the spot.

Mark,

Thanks for the linkage diagrams in the article - this will surely help. Part of the difficulty is how dark & hidden this area is - my having the Prime-Loc remote filter also hides the area.

What also is funny is I have 3 springs down there. One broke off and was hanging from the rearmost plastic swivel deal, and the other two (slightly diferent sizes) are hanging loose from the front one.

Strange why mine has 3 when the diagram you provided shows one - is it a difference in the model years ?

I might add I have the Pac Brake, and I wondered if they put on another one to help activate the brake / throttle switch ?

I am planning to make it to the local So Cal gathering the next Sat so Bob4x4 can assist in the spring replacementas he offered very generously to do.

Bob if you read this, I got the map to Avi's place in Menifee. What time does it start ?

Thanks all, David B.

That spring picture is only of the front spring. in total on a '98 12 valve there are three springs. Mine came with two down low toward the back of the pump. One was lighter and the other heavier and running parralell to each other. Then up at the upper front like in the picture is the 3rd spring. If I was home with my scanner I would scan the picture in my book. There is probably one some place on the net but I don't know where.

Thanks for the diagram. Thats just what I needed too. I had mine in the correct place. I guess maybe the GSK just made the throttle feel softer. I have gotten used to it since then. Thanks again.

if this works i circled the location of the three springs. my lower one broke on the way home today. 180,000 miles took a while to figure out what happened till i located the "3rd spring" in the manual.

The lower one in the picture is actually a double spring. There are two hooks on each end. Sometimes one of the two will wear or rust off so the spring is weaker. The replacement spring for it has plastic covers on the hooks to prevent the usualy problem. Common failure.

I ended up going to OSH and and getting a spring set and replaced and added springs to make the linkage tighter. No bucking anymore.
