Hello again, I had the problem where the throttle would just not respond at certain times, and seemed to get progressively worse. I now have a stumble and white smoke, and the mighty cummins crackles out the straight pipe like you wouldn't believe. Doesn't run rough all the time, just when the engine is unloaded. I have a quickcheck 2 and all sensors read normal, code was set for 0612 i believe, timing malfunction. Not an active code, so no check eng. lite. I changed the fuel filter less than 4,000 miles ago, and I monitor that at the injection pump, and since the lift pump was replaced at about 34,000, I have seen good pressure. Bad news is I waited to put that guage on til it had 33,900 miles, so i have no idea what was happening before that, all I know is it was really dead when I put the guage on, like 0-1 psi. What is really happening here?

VP44?

Thanks for the input, I can take it, still under warranty.

Sounds like what mine was doing as the VP44 was going out. It would temporarily lose alll throttle response but would start running nomally again within a few seconds. At first it would only happen once or twice per week, but eventually it would happen nearly every time it was driven. Each time it did this it would set a P0216 code.

I am glad for you that you are still under warranty. Mine started going out at 106,000 so I had to foot the bill.

Ditto what Noland said. Mine is going through the same thing. Took it in last friday for those symptoms and codes(P0216), service writer says it is the pump, mechanic says it is the pump codes point to the point but DC would not authorize the repair unless it did it again. So 45 minutes after leaving the shop it did it again (on the way out of town no less) and is getting worse. Called them this morning told to bring it in so they can capture the codes, they will then get authorization and order the pump then I can bring it back once the pump arrives for them to r&r it.

With that hassle BarryG...

it almost makes me glad that mine waited until the warranty was out and it cost me $1550 out of my pocket to replace my toasted VP44. :eek:

I remember the days of going to the dealer for lack of service... those were the days!:p

rashwor;

Cant wait till this time next year when the warranty will be up due to mileage. Looking forward to paying for everything. Ya know I could understand it at least somewhat if not all agreed on what the problem was and they couldn't duplicate it but heck everyone agrees and if they were willing to set it up in the conditions that I said it happened in they could duplicate it. I asked if they were going to come out and get me and pay for the tow if it crapped out on the road. "Sir that is not our responsibility" was the response. I will bet that DC would have been more than happy to sell me a vp44 if I were paying for it, and probably would have got the lecture of a lifetime -that thing is a timebomb getting ready to go off, I wouldn't drive that thing to the supermarket without getting it fixed yada yada yada.

Go to cummins

I finally got to the dealer today, and they searched and read their books for about 2 hours, then they told me it'd be best for me to take it right to cummins, then they would pay for all of the warranty work. . Yay I will update tomorrow on what they tell me.

Bad VP44

Cummins said that the vp is bad, but they don't have one in stock, now I have to wait for the dealer to get it in, then the dealer is going to put it in.

Kinda surprised me when the cummins tech SUGGESTED that I install a good set of aftermarket injectors. Makes it easy to justify that purchase when my woman asks why. hehe.

Guess to make clear for those who search for the solution in the future, if you have misfires, stumbles, white smoke, and loss of throttle not resulting from the tps, suspect the VP44.
