Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) throttle position sensor problem?

What would be the signs of a throttle position sensor needing replacement?



When my truck hits 1100RPM it will surge Jumping to 1200RPM. It keeps doing this until I give it more throttle.

Also, when you "floor" the truck it will rev then the power will kick in after 2 second delay.



Any feedback will help.

Is it a bad throttle position sensor or could it be torque converter

Does the truck mph surge with the rpm or does the truck mph not change?? If the mph does not change it sounds like a transmission problem, if it does change it sounds like a APPS problem.

what is the APPS? And where is it located?

The APPS is the accelerator peddle position sensor... replaced the old TPS or throttle position sensor. Its the black thing on the side of the engine in from of the intake horn. Or right below your oil dip stick handle.

Yeah correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the APPS replaced the TPS in 1999 or something like that, is that right?

my 02 ho had a real jumpy throttle and when using my cruise cotrol it wouldn't idle down sometimes when tured off. The tac. would jump around alot to. At 18000 mi. I pulled of the I-80 at N. Platte Ne. and it wouldn't idle below 1400 rpm I stoped and I had no thottle at all and my ck. engine light came on. I idle to the dodge place and the code said throttle position censor was the problem they changed it and that took care of it. Anyway my truck now idles down every time I turn off the crusie and the tac is pretty steady and the thorttle isn't as jumpy as it was.

I just replaced my APPS in my 98. 5 24v. I tried to get one from Cummins but they have discontinued them. It is a Dealer Item only listing for $600 from DC. I got one for $400 plus tax after much horse trading at dealer! You have to buy whole throttle assembly just to get sensor. Its a Rip... ... but what else can you do.

That sucks! I need a new apps and am trying to find anyplace to sell me one under the $600 dealer price. . If anyone knows of somwhere reasonable to buy one let me know. It sucks that you have to buy the whole assembly to get a little sensor.

IS there any kind of maintenance that can be done to it to make it last longer?

I have seen some old threads that takl about opening it up and cleaning it but it looked pretty involved.

I agree with you... I've seen posts were others have taken the TPS apart, cleaned them and they worked fine.

I don't know if the APPS is the same.



I reprogrammed/reset mine once and that helped. Have you tried that?

yeah, I have reset a couple of times, it helps a little for a week or so and then goes bach to the same old thing, in and out of O/D and the gears at 43-50 mph. It is driving me nuts. I think that I will just have to pay up:{
