Started having a problem with my truck in the last week or so, the pedal goes dead, the truck is still running but there is no throttle for about 5-10 seconds. After that the check engine light comes on and the truck runs just fine. The check engine light eventually goes out but this will happen about once or twice a week.

I took the truck to the local Dodge dealer, they ran a test with their computer and said the Throttle Position Sensor was bad. The quote to replace the sensor was $454. 00 for the part and 2 hours labor for a total of approx. $600. 00. Has anyone else had this problem and is the going price for this repair? Is this something I can replace myself or am I better off letting the dealer do the repair?

Any help would be appreciated!!

bobcat, the tps/apps can be purchased direct from cummins for at least 100. 00 less.

If you have basic hand tools and a couple of hours max , you should have no problem as long as you has basic mechanical knowledge.

There should be directions on the net or I would be happy to fax you some information out of the factory service manual.

GO FOR IT

I bet member "Gary - K7GLD" has a link. He has lots of info in his reader's rigs about APPS. I hope you don't mind me saying so Gary.

First you open the hood and look at the black plastic cover over the injection pump... take it off by the 2 black plastic screws that hold it on... then take loose your accelerator pedal cable and cruise cable with a small screwdriver... . then there is like 6 or 8 ten millimeter bolts that hold it on to intake horn... . then unplug old one and reverse to install.

I also have a spare APPS or bellcrank that I would sell

Hope this helps, Chris

You shouldn't have to pay those prices, I'm having the same issue on a '96 Ram Van (same drivetrain as a gasser Ram Truck 5. 2 V-8, 46 RE trans), and Napa here has a new Throttle Postition Sensor part # 219-054 (don't know if that is exactly the same one as for our trucks), for all of $ 38. 00.

Considering CTram said hardest part is 'propping open hood', you should be good to go.

I'm going to perform the APPS / TPS reset procedure now, and buy that new sensor if that doesn't fix it, or only fixes it short term.

Thanks Walt. I just realized that because my Ram Van B2500 is a 1996, it actually has the TPS like the 2nd gen Ram trucks do. Presumably, the APPS reset procedure won't apply, but rather the cleaning procedure or replacement of the TPS and checking ground & voltages.
