Well, I know it's not really a "throttle", but you get the idea, the loud pedal.

Anyway, a while back, one of the two return springs on my 98 12V 3500 loud pedal broke. These are the ones down on the P7100 pump. I went to Cummins, where they thought it was probably a DC part, but after making 'em look in the book, they sure enough had the part shown and listed, but not in stock. So, I ordered a couple, only about 4 bucks each.

Well, while waiting, I found a spring that would work (it's *REAL* touchy with only one spring). Eventually, the ordered springs showed up. But, while they are the same length, they're much smaller in diameter and about half the tension of the originals.

So, back to Cummins. They look it up again, and sure enough, what I got was the same part number as the manuals call for, but obviously not the same. The Cummins guy thought it was just from another supplier (he's new and seems rather clueless). Even from another supplier, I'd think the tension would be pretty close, since that's one of the basic specifications of springs besides dimensions.

So, what I'd like to know, does anyone have any info on how to get the proper springs for the throttle return? What part numbers are shown in the various manuals you folks have out there? I'm sure if I find the right part number, I can get the right spring. I kinda think these light weight springs will leave the pedal too light, making control difficult (like when only one spring is there).

Thanks,

My 97 had a problem that the truck would jump and buck under load, so off to Dodge I went. They told me that there was a TSB on this problem and also there is a kit to stop the problem, the only problem is that the kit is $200. The kit has 2 springs and an arm that when mounted changes the angle of the springs.

So I went down to Pep Boys and got a package of generic springs and found 2 of them that match the old ones but with a stronger tension. Pulled the old ones off and reinstalled the new springs with the factor clips and down the road I went with problem fixed. . Total cost was about $5... and it done basically the same thing...

Ok where is the picture of the stacks.....

This sounds kind of strange. When I had a problem with mine I just went to the Dodge dealer. They had the replacement in stock, no problem. It is a double wound or two springs wound together, however you want to look at it. The ends are enclosed with plastic so they will last longer. The original one wore thru one of the wires and the other was ready to break. Dodge should have the spring in stock.

Joes right on the money. I just repaced the very same spring set-up this morning on a truck at work. I will double check the part numbers in the morning if they are different than the ones listed i will let you know. This spring set-up was 8. 35 canadian from the dealer. In US its probably a dollar. LOL. :)

Thanks for the numbers. My trucks been bucking a little even without the trailer when the throttle is slightly feathered. With the trailer, it could qualify me for the PDR Bull Riding finals lately.

Try this # ... . 4874476 ... or P-4874476

OK, I finally remembered to check the part number for the springs that I got from Cummins. The Cummins part I got was 3931510, but these are the light springs I mentioned originally. The original spring (as well as these) are a single wound spring. The ends have gray plastic things on 'em which click on to the studs on the injector pump. These springs are kinda down under the pump, on the driver's side, there are 2 side by side.

Can someone with a service manual for a '98 (or one of those Cummins engine manuals) look up this part? I'll try the Dodge stealer... uh, dealer one of these days, but it takes a good hour or so to get over there, and I don't get to that part of town often.

Mine broke a couple weeks ago. I'm still using too. Mine broke at the ends. So I bent the ends and put it back on. But I do gotta get a spring soon don't think this one will last.

Yep, mine broke at the bend that holds it in the plastic end piece. I filed off the plastic and re-bent it. About a month later, it broke in the middle, no way to cobble that one back together...
