Yesterday while pulling out of the parking lot the peddle went soft and I had nothin but idle. I found the throtlle rod between the pump and throttle assy had broken right where the left hand right hand bolt threads into the tube. It broke at the point where the lock nut hit the tube. Over-torqued nut? The dealer did the recall on the socket ends of that tube about a year ago and would have had to adjust those nuts.

Not trying to blame the dealer but has any one else had this problem and are they prone to failing like this. Also the dealer wants 30 bucks for a little 3 inch piece of all-thread. r-hand on one side l-hand on the other. Thanks for any advice. Bill

You probably will have to get it from the dealer. The auto has an adjustment in the service manual for the rod because of the TPS. I don't know about the five speed. It would probably be a good idea to adjust it so that the lever on the pump just contacts the high idle stop at WOT so there is minimum strain on the rod. It's possible to put the rod in backwards which puts a strain on it.

I had the same problem when I had my '97. The double threaded rod broke on mine too. This happened three separate times within 90,000 miles. Each time I was pulling a 30' fifth wheel RV. The recall only concerned the rod ends but it was the dual-threaded adjustment bolt that kept breaking. I heard a number of complaints about this. I think the adjustment bolt was too small or needed to be a higher strength steel. Apparently the engine vibration and the load under higher throttle caused the bolt to break. I was going to have someone machine a stronger one out of a grade 8 bolt or something, but I ended up making a complete spare rod adjusted to the exact same length as the one on the engine so I could just swap them out if I had another failure.

Mine broke on me too... twice. The most recent was on the NJ Turnpike while towing my 31 foot travel trailer :( Well, I had to have someone bring me parts from a dealership, Idled the truck and trailer down the shoulder for 4. 5 miles to a rest area. thank God it's a 5-speed! I have not figured out a cure yet, but now carry a spare.

I had the same exact problem. Was yours frozen on the turnbuckle? because mine was and when I went to adjust it snaped. I ended up fixing it by welding

it and never had any problems exept adjustsments. However, if the part is only $30. 00 I'm going to get a new one and save the welded rod as a spare.

It is a weakness from what I can tell. My cousin's '97 broke a couple years ago and my '98 broke this past summer (tie wire in the tool box came in handy here). There were enough threads left on mine I was able to reconnect it but I have the new parts in my tool box for next time. I don't think your dealer is to blame.

After my first one broke I figure 8ed wire over the new one to have a redundent system. The second one broke north of Las Cruces and I drove it to Tucson before getting it replaced. The third one broke just North of Sacremento in rush hour traffic and I drove on to an RV park in Red Bluff. Did I mention all three breaks occured with a 5er in tow? The current one has lasted over 200k miles and is the only one that I installed myself. The first two broke while the truck was in warranty. Go figure.

I had the rod break will towing a 35 ft 5th wheel on I-70 in columbas, OH. I was traveling around 60 mph and went over an expansion joint of an overpass when I heard a little metal clang noise and the petal dropped from under my foot. After 4. 5 hoours seeing along I-70, my rig was towed off the road. I had to wait a day for the shop to determine the problem and have th erod shipped to them. from the other responses, I believe a person needs to carry an extra rod with them. Thanks for the useful information.
