throttle

Question:
I replaced the throttle rod linkage because it broke. I also replaced the return spring. Now when I apply lite throttle and I may hit a little bump the truck starts hopping as though the throttle is being pulled in and out. I have to use the clutch or push the petal to the floor for it to stop.
Is the spring to lite or is there another adjustment? I looked in the the manual and set the 5" adj. for the 5 speed but that was all I saw.

My new truck is the same way. I assumed it was because of the higher torque of the diesel, and that I would have to get used to it. When I am approaching speed bumps or something like that, I put the clutch in before it get to it. Do we have a problem or is this normal?

I wouldn't worry to much. The old Detroits were that way as well. Has to do with the tension on the return spring. My 99 does it too. Won't hurt anything.

Preston, There is a TSB on the "bucking truck" related to 12V pumps and trottle linkage. The linkage is changed to reduce the sensitivity. Check Dave Fritzs site out or do a search.

used to find that when the motor mounts were loose. Engine torques to one side and the relationship of the firewall (pedal) to the engine changes.

Even my 10 banger does it once in a while. Seems like it is most likely when in 1rst and creeping, either up to speed bump like mentioned above, or off road. Don't have a clue whether the throttle linkages are the same or not. It is kindof a pain in the a**. I just figured it was normal also and just used the clutch more.

A-lot of people discover this is due to your foot on a sensitive throttle linkage. I. e. your foot bounces slightly, truck bounces, your foot bounces more, let's call it the boing effect. Go over a stretch of road this happens on and try driving with the outside of your right foot resting against the center hump to stabilize it. Another option is to adjust the seat for a better angle. One of the reasons I like driving with cowboy boots on -- perfect for working the pedals.

ps: this is specific to 12V so I'm moving it over there...
