Took my truck in two weeks ago to Carolina Dodge to listen to my 6sp and drive train. I've posted earlier about the noise that comes fm under the truck at parking lot speeds. The dealer concluded it is my throw out bearing.

Now I'm self taught and certainly no expert but don't you only use the TOB when you step on the clutch pedal!?!? And when the pedal is out you are not utilizing the bearing...

My noise is only audiable when the peddal is out. If you push the clutch in, the noise immediately stops.

Not sure what the noise is but I pulled at CGWR of 20,660lbs accross country and it's no worse or better. It's made the noise sice new. My 5sp 95 didn't make this noise at all so that's why it's a concern. New truck, new noises. But like I said, I noticed it coming to a stop at the first red light I came to. It's never changed. Not sure how to explain what the noise sounds like. It will do it in any of the 6 speeds but always down low just above idle. The sound is ugly but I sure don't have a clue what it is.

Got the feeling my dealer dosen't either and now they want to replace a throw out bearing that most likely is fine...

Does this provoke any thoughts or comments?

Ian. :(

I had a Mitsubishi 5 sp truck that would make a clicking sound in second gear. It turned out to be a chipped gear, once they replaced it all was fine for 150,000. I agree with you that the TOB is a LOOOOOOOOOOOOONG shot. But it may be a necessary step.

Had an old Chevy 1/2 ton (hey - it was a cool '64 stepside so no bowtie jokes) that made noise like you are describing.

The bearing can make some contact with the fingers on the pressure plate. The bearing may be chattering with no load, and when you push the pedal the bearing becomes loaded.

Does it make the noise in neutral and sitting still? If it is the TOB then it should.

Input shaft bearing???

It could be the input shaft bearing making noise. The fluid level should be checked first. I have heard this noise with a lot of the 98-94 five speeds when they start to get miles on them. I usually tell their owners to think about getting a new one or a rebuild. My 99 5 spd does not make any noise, so I can pick up on someone else's noisy trans quite easily.

I could also be the front of the pilot bearing riding against the pressure plate or chattering against the fork. Anyhow, your truck should not be making that noise.

Good luck, and I hope you do not have your truck at the dealership for a month. :(

RAMalama,

The Dodge hydraulic clutch system keeps the TOB in contact with the pressure plate fingers all the time. There is no TOB return spring to disengage the TOB when the clutch pedal is fully disengaged . This 'not so great' idea lets the TOB continue to be driven by PP fingers but under very light contact pressure. If the pressure is too light or the bearing is a little stiff, it may be running underspeed (or not at all) and grinding against the fingers. When I changed a cluth at 10K, my TOB contact face was pretty ugly and there were steel fines in the bottom of the bell housing.

I've learned something through all your input. It just might be the TOB after all.

Welp, all the parts are in at the dealer and they say it'll just take a day. I think I'll trust fate to their quality of workmanship and see what happens.

Thanks for all the input. While my truck is "in" I'll be holding my breath.

Much thanks to all !

PS: Does anybody know a mental health clinic for our trucks to treat the very serious "post dealership mechanic syndrome". I understand it takes days for our trucks to settle down and behave as they always have after work by the dealer... :D

RAMa,

About the clinic - have you heard of the Chance brothers?

Fat, Slim and None.

Anyway look your truck over good, especially the little hookups. Even with a good service manager looking over my truck after a job (and DC breathing down his neck) I still find little things wrong.

Noise

I had the same question... I first noticed it after I replaced my clutch. You're always hyper sensitive to things after doing major work so the noise may have been there before the clutch replacement. A couple other guys also told me they have the same noise. I also just bought my wife a brand new Jeep Wrangler and that transmission has the exact same noise with the clutch pedal out but... it's much louder. It's probably not an issue unless it's really loud or you hear it getting worse. Let us know what the result is though...

Ian, you are hearing clutch rattle. There is nothing wrong with your truck its just that those little springs have loosened up enough to start rattling at slow speed. ... ... ... ... Pete

RAMalama,

I bought my truck used at 24K miles with the same noise and the understanding that the dealer would fix it. First, they put in a clutch kit. Noise went away for about 5K miles then started returning. Next, they put in a brand new 6 speed. Not a rebuild; this thing was brand new. Noise still there. Finally, they searched and found this rattling noise to be a common problem. I told them if it was not an indication of a problem about to happen, not to worry about it any more. They did not want to quit there. They ended up retrofitting my 2000 with the flywheel, input shaft, larger clutch, etc. of the 2001 HO model. Noise has been gone for 10K miles. I am convinced it was the rattle of the clutch springs as Pete says.

All this may not apply to you since you probably already have the clutch setup that they put in mine.
