Fellow TDR members,

Last week I noticed a loud noise coming from under my truck. When I got home I got under her and it seemed to be coming from the bell housing. I drove it 90 miles to Scheid Diesel to the diesel Doctors for a diagnosis. The next day I was told that the thrust bearing was the problem. This requires that the engine must be removed from the truck and turned upside down for the repairs to be done properly. This is a "B" series 98. 5 with a little over 120,000 miles. Have any of you ever had this happen to you?

I have seen many cranck thrust bearings go bad but very rarely do they require engine removal unless it caused block or cranckshaft damage in this case removal of engine is a given. Have they removed the oil pan and visually inspected the area. and how much debris was in the oil pan if it failed there woild be a lot of bearing material and metal in oil pan. usually if the thrust gets worn enough the flywheel, clutch and related parts move to places not normal and this is where the noise comes from. Have them cut the oil filter open and check for signs of metal in there if the pan hasn't been dropped yet it will be a good indicator of failure. At minimum it will require rolling in new mains and rod bearings.

I don't think they have started on it yet. I'll talk to them tomorrow to see what they do know. Thanks for the help.
