When I start from a complete stop in first or second I feel a substantial thump in the drivetrain. It doesn't happen when I'm rolling or when I shift to the next gear. It's almost like something is loose and slips a bit when I start out. Anyone experience anything like this?

Thanks, Gene Earl.

A friend of mine asked me the same question last week. I did a search and could not find any info. yet. Maybe we will get some more reply's. I told him it sounded like a u-joint but he did not think so.

Are you sure its in the drive train?

My mom has a 97 3500 4x4, I can feel the thump in the steering wheel right as you unload the drivetrain coming to stop and then thumps again as you load up the drive train taking off again. Occurs occasionally at higher speeds as you step on or off throttle. My assumption is the steering shaft problem.

Not sure what you feeling, but that one I have come across but haven't repaired yet. I was planning to fill in the slack of the square steering sleeve with something to see if it stops. May we have the same problem and I am assuming the wrong thing.

I will be interested to see what you find.

Now that you mention it I had an old Dodge pickup that had a similar problem one time. My ring gear bolts had loosened slightly and when I would go from reverse to forward I would get a clunk. It was just the slop between the bolts and the holes.

I also tried to do a search for clunk ect. I can't get the search to work. What did you put in to get the thread that you found?

I think we are going to get a new member out of this, he is very happy with all the help he is getting!!! Thanks, Ron
