Ticking and #5 injector line

I posted this in the 911 but I though I would put it here too since I am leaving at midnite for Sonora TX



I have noticed a loud ticking sound and after changing my fuel filter I started the truck and the ticking sound is coming from the #5 (next last) injectin line. It is vibrating while the others are smooth.



Whats wrong - fouled injector?

I would venture to say that yes it is a bad injector. I drive an '04 and just had my number 5 replaced a little over two months ago, and it seems to be a pretty common thing with these new Cummins.

From what I've been told it should. I think the only problem would be if it sticks open. Does it sound kinda like a rod knocking?

Okay. That's what mine sounded like. If you are under warranty I would surely stop if you have a chance. The only downside is that they will probably have to order the injector. If not hey your under warranty. I have a question real quick. Just comparing trucks. With my truck when it's under about 30 degrees it will warm up to operating temperature, but if you stop and idle for awhile it will go all the way back to cold. Do you have this issue.

I really couldn't say for sure. It hasnt got below 30* here in a couple of years. while I am driving up north, I usually dont let it idle long enough to tell. I have let it sit for 30 minutes or so and It seems to hold temp fine.



I'll call my dealer tomorrow, on my way back.

Hey there. Yes this will happen if the truck isn't fully warmed up yet, or if you have the heat on too high. I find that if I have the heat any higher than setting 2 when it's really cold out, if I'm idling the coolant temps will drop. Thats why they offer that high idle tsb. Kick it up to 1100rpms and it should maintain its temp better.



When you guys had this #5 injector problem, when are you hearing the noise and how loud/abnormal sounding was it? I've heard of a lot of ppl having loose injectors that needed to be tightened. I think maybe the original poster should at least check #5 to see that it's tight.

It sounds like a bad injector. My only concern would be if it sticks open. Sticking open can melt a piston with normal driving and no towing. Get it to a trustworthy dealer ASAP. JMO. Good luck.
