So I had a fuel pump replaced about 20K ago and ever since there has been a ticking sound from that area. I have read about turning the pump shaft 30 degrees. My one question is: will this change pump timing or does this type of pump provide constant pressure. My last truck was a 12V so I am less familiar with the computerised pumps. Thanks

The CP3 fuel pump isn't a "true" injection pump like your 12 valve was. Your 12 valve injectors fired when the injection pump pressurized them. Therefore, the 12 valve pump had to be timed to the engine to keep your injection pulses in the right spot.

The CP3 is really just a high pressure fuel pump that keeps the rail pressurized. Think of it as a really high pressure lift pump. Your injectors fire when the computer tells them. They only reply on the CP3 to provide a constant fuel supply.

Alot of people have talked about the injection pump "tic". Personally, I haven't done it to mine. I can hear a tic, but it's really quiet. Plus, it's a diesel. I expect it to make a few noises. :)

One more question befor diving in, Looks like this can be done by loosening the 27MM bolt on the gear shaft, popping the gear with a puller then reinstalling all without actually taking the pump off. I assume the shaft can be turned by hand easilly?

Actually, you can "retime" the CP3 to eliminate the slapping of the timing gears. Something about when the timing gears come around and the pump pistons are not pressured, the timing gear slaps the other gears, causing a ticking. removing the gear, moving it slightly, and reinstalling (trial and error) will sometimes eliminate the ticking.

There was an extensive thread on another forum documenting it. If you have one with a slapping pump, it is obvious through the radiator.

Here is the process from my post in another thread 5/18/07

The procedure is as follows.

Put a paint mark on the pump shaft and gear. Remove the drive gear nut and gear and rotate the pump shaft clockwise by hand about 30 degrees. Verify the paint marks are now 30 degrees apart. Re-install the gear and nut and start engine. If noise is still the same, repeat by moving another 30 degrees. If noise is not changed at 30 or 60 degrees the cause is not from the pump gear rocking on the gear train.

this ticking you guys are talking about, does it happen when you just turn the key on and not start the motor?

Mine ticks like a spark jumping from a plug. But the engine is not running. Its not the lift pump because it would stop and you can hear the pump too but it stops.

Can't really tell where the ticking is coming from, sounds like maybe the turbo side until you stick your ear over there, then it sounds like the other side.

Is that the ticking you guys are talking bout?

No, this happens when/while the truck is running... its actually more of a clacking than a ticking (from those I have heard). Typically louder if you stand in front of the truck and listen through the the radiator (on the driver's side)...

That ticking you're hearing has to do with the injection system. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it is a capacitor on the #1 injector wiring.

ZZman, That ticking you here when before starting is a good thing, the one I am talking about is pretty loud, louder than the cummins and sounds alot like a bad lifter on a gas motor. I did pull the gear and turn the shaft 30 degrees and it stopped. Couldn't turn by had though I put a rubber hose on the shaft threads and turned with a vice grip (very getly). Somone has a you tube vidio with tick I am talking about, the same truck also has a early detonation knock but listen and you here a definitive tick to the engine sound as well.
