Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Bad Fast!!

My truck made this noise last winter when it was stock and it has started again this winter with my current setup. The ticking noise occurs at heavy throttle above 1800 rpm. It increases in sound level and frequency with rpm. It goes away as soon as I lift the pedal, regardless of rpm. It gets louder as rpm's increase with a heavy right foot. Could it be the lift pump? Any ideas?

Could be the lp. Mine was louder with similar driving conditions. Got to doing it at idle also. New one is quiet. Got mine from the local C-IH dealer. Lots cheaper than Cummins or D/C.

Does anyone think the noise may be from an internal source, ie rods, valves, etc. Man, I really hope its the lift pump.

bmoeller, is there a difference in l/p's from year to year? How much $ from C-IH?

AWray have you checked you valve lash? I think all LPs are the same, and Case has them for the best price based on another thread I saw.

Another possibility is a problem with a damper spring on your clutch?

I had the valves run about 15k miles ago. I checked the exhaust on #1 cylinder when I adjusted the timing 500 miles ago and it was okay. I'll run the valves just to rule that out as a possibility before spending any money on a lift pump. I saw that thread about the l/p too. It appears Case IH is the cheapest place.

I wish I had a clutch to have a damper spring problem!! D@#n stock auto gave up the ghost 300 miles after I bought the truck at 78k. Now I'm ATSed!!!!!

I appreciate all the suggestions. Everything that has been suggested sounds like a realistic possibility. What has me totally confused is the noise is only present in cooler weather - like below 55*F or so.

That being said, an exhaust leak at the back 3 cylinders of the motor sounds like a good place to start.

where is the noise comming from? i have a ticking noise that sounds like a valve knocking. i changed the lift pump and overflow valve and it was still there. i found it the other day though. i put my finger on the 4 wheel drive lever and the noise went away until i took my finger back off. i hope there is nothing wrong with my t-case. hope this helps.

last time you changed oil?

I seemed to notice that ours quieted down a bit after last oil change.

-Does the noise go away once the engine heats up?

Just changed the oil and it had no effect on the noise. The "tick" gets less noticeable after the motor heats up. But if I stand on the throttle, it sounds like I have a Singer sewing machine under there.

Unfortunately, I have not had time to check into any of the suggestions since I made this post, too many irons right now and the BUCKEYES beat Michigan this weekend. I'll check the valves and look for an exhaust leak and report back.

I checked for exhaust leaks and fortunately, I did not find any. I also adjusted the valves and that ticking noise is still there. Anybody have any other ideas?
