I am posting this on behalf of a friend who has a 12V, I hang out in the 24V section normally.

His truck has an intermittent ticking sound that I think may be coming from the area of the mechanical lift pump. The noise sounds too light of a tapping to be coming from internal in the engine and it is more noticeable on the drivers side. Just wondering if these pumps go bad and start making noise?

Not sure on his miles, I think somewhere around 275K

Any thoughts or comments?

probably the lift pump... can you hear it if you listen between the bed and the cab on the driver's side?

he can replace it and the tick will probably go away... then it will probably come back in about 5 miles

I wouldn't worry about it

tighten the spring on the pressure relief valve , mine started ticking real loud one day and I replaced the valve and the ticking was gone . I also had real low power on that day. Power came back with the relief valve

Ticking can also apparently result from slap between the pump pushrod and the piston - which is forced back against the rod (or not as well) by an ever weakening return spring. Pump rebuild/replace usually quiets it.
