In 12 valve i seem to hear a ticking noise coming from the driver side under the hood. Im going on a long trip and dont really want any problems. Any help would be great.

sounds like it may be the lift pump, mine has ticked for a few months now. I don't know if it means it is on it's way out or not, I replaced one before because it was ticking however it never let me sit and I noticed no difference in performance after the swap so I kept the old one. I've had the current one on for 5 years now. It will be interesting to see what everyone else has to say here, I am curious.

How long do lift pumps last mine truck has a ticking noise too I thought it was a valve since they need adjusting but it doesn't sound like it is coming from under the valve covers. the ticking is most noticeable at idle.

Mine was ticking for two years before the lift pump finally died. Carry a spare lift pump and change it out yourself when she dies.

Its your lift pump– the return spring is getting weak and since the piston plunger isn't 'scurrying' back fast enough the push rod is slamming into it as the next cycle starts. You'll probably be ok but are looking at a pump swap before tooo long.
