Ticking noise

2012 RAM 6.7 (Missing some parts...) (No Codes) Single Tick noise since I bought it with 140,000 miles. Recently the ticking has become a double tick on and off... Could it be the CP3 gear? Or possibly the valves need adjusted?

Offhand a few things cause noise.

Remove the fan belt and spin every pulley by hand. Feel each bearing for slop. Pay special attention to the water pump.

Cracked flex plate.

Is the a rubber crankshaft damper of one of the fluid filled ones? Is it loose on the engine? Any damage to it regardless of type?

Low oil pressure esp. under these conditions can rattle the pressure relief valves in the oil cooler.
Do a UOA and cut the oil filter open looking for "part numbers". (AKA Large chunks of metal in the filter big enough to read a part number off of.)

Consider having the injectors tested as a source of the knock.

IMO styles vary but in a future video my preference would be "just the noise" you are after and edit out the long explanations etc. Can't hear it very well and not for very long for the total length of the video. I can't tell how loud it is other than it's there. You may need a helper with a stethoscope to narrow it down some. Or they do a video where the noise is louder.

Also, check for a loose high pressure injector line clamp. I had a friend with a 2007 5.9 that had a similar noise at idle. It turned out to be #4 fuel injector line clamp. I know yours is a 6.7, but I think the fuel system is very similar.

When you put it in gear you load the engine. On my 2003 it sounded like a quarter hitting the windshield. But only made noise under a load and with a MT it was rough to load it. Found a bent pushrod that was rubbing, low oil pressure, and a bad sleeve that was moving in the cylinder. After a rebuild the sleeve problem showed up as it still knocked so we used a different block.

UOA and looking at the oil filter media will help with a rod knock concern.

Your noise sounds like 1/2 crankshaft speed. So focus on powerstroke or camshaft related. May have to cap off injectors to see if it's a specific cylinder.

Not sure there is a good way to inspect flexplates without "while your there replace it" pulling the trans. Borescope (or thin USB) camera may or may not see a crack.

This video is a comparison of the knock sound of my 2012 Ram / Cummins 6.7 and another guy's 2013 6.7. The knock sounds a little different on his camera - because of the difference in his phone and mine and his exhaust is also different than mine - but the "knock" is coming from the same exact place and very similar in "sound". He changed out an injector (#6) on his and the knock was resolved.

On mine, I have checked the idler and tensioner pulleys - the sound is NOT coming from the top end (valves) at all - but I guess it could be my flex plate... or even my CP3 - but...

Was it an obvious crack or did u replace it from an elimination perspective?
