Need your guys help:

I'm getting a ticking or knocking noise from my truck. I only here it at idle and after it gets warmed up. I thought it might be an exhaust leak, but I checked and I don't think that is it. This thing drives me crazy when I here it, please let me know what you think.

Try coasting in gear and turning the key off to shut down the injection system. If the tick goes away then it is injector noise most likely. If the tick is present with the key off then check your valve clearance.

Thanks Texas Diesel, I will try that and see what happens. It seems like it only does it after you drive the truck for awhile and then when you let it sit and idle for a few seconds you can here the ticking noise. If anyone else has any suggestions, please let me know.

I have the same thing on mine. It has only 2500 miles on it. Hopefully it's normal, after a search on this site I haven't found one answer to this question. It sounds like a gasser valve tick and I only hear it at idle. It's not very loud but is in addition to the diesel knock. It gets this after warm up. Also on initial startup engine seems rougher than after warmup. Is this normal?.

Yep, some synthetic oil of your chosing will make it much smoother at start-up.

Although yours is a 1999 model, there is a TSB that describes similar symptoms for 2000 model year, it is TSB 21-12-00.

Well I have to take back what I said earlier about the symptoms. I can hear the ticking/rattle/clatter even at initial startup in the morning. Walked around the truck briefly and it sounds louder on the passenger side. I'm not sure if this is normal or not as I've never owned another diesel so cant compare. It sounds like a slightly quieter version of worn valves in a gasser. I can also hear it while driving.

I'm probably making a mountain out of a molehill but I did read of another member that got an engine bad from delivery and never really knew anything was wrong due to not being able to compare... .
