Pulling my four horse trailer a few days ago with about 4000 lbs in it. I noticed if I got on it some I head a ticking noise coming from the engine. It sort of sounded like a gas engine valve noise. The truck is stock with 74k on it. Any Ideas. Thanks

Could it be driver induced? I know when flying the engines usually develope strange noises as soon as you are out of range of a safe landing area. Those noises usually quiet down when you feel comfortable again. It may be something, may not. My Cummins has a way of sounding just a little different under different conditions. Maybe yours is just sounding different when working a little harder. That is a tough question to answer without hearing it firsthand.

Sorry, I'm no real help.

Dean,

johnrv4 and I both have noticed a dull thud type of noise when we tow sometimes. It seems to gradually go away after towing, but still remains for awhile. For me, it sometimes sounds a little like a a gasser's tappet noise. I've gotten used to it and don't worry about it anymore - it runs great. We think it could be the trucks making electronic/timing adjustments under load conditions, but who knows. We both have 2001 24 valvers, by the way. His is an ETH, mine is an ETC. I've heard things like this from other guys, too. I wonder if some of us are just more sensitive to these noises than others, or maybe not all the trucks do it.

Thanks guys, appreciate your input. I failed to mention mine is a 96 with 74k on it. My wife hears the noise too. It seems to be there after I am on the road for awhile as well. Just stands out when I give it a little throttle.

What is ETH and ETC on the 24 valve units? We looked at the 2002 units and are they ever nice. Makes mine look old and worn out. They are pricey though. Thanks again.

ETH, ETC

Dean,

ETH is the order code for the high output Cummins (comes with the 6-speed). ETC is the code for the "regular" Cummins - with 5-speed or automatic.

Return line is the one closest to the radiator, correct? Seems really easy to replace... at least you can get a wrench on it. Getting the valve out sometimes requires grinding away at the head... or so I've heard.
