Hello I need some info. I hear a ticking sound thats not a normal sound coming from my engine after it heats up. My friend says it is coming from the valve cover. When you put your hand on the cover you can feel the ticking it only happens when the truck is in drive or reverse and you can hear it in the cab. Dose anyone know if the valve have to be adjusted on this engine. The ticking just started a few days ago. The truck only has 38500 miles on it,I did and oil change about 3 weeks ago and checked the oil level today and it was good. Thanks Mike

Injector

I highly doubt it is valve adjustment as that type of clicking is independant of engine load. If it only happens in drive or reverse - it sounds like an injector issue (load on the engine). Does it sound somewhat like a rod bearing knocking (that is what mine sounded like). I suggest having the dealer do an injector kill test to see which cylinder is causing the noise. This is a really neat feature of the common rail engine in my opinion.

I posted this before but on mine the dealer just swapped the #6 (which was making noise) with #3 injector to see if the noise would move. Instead the knocking went away and hasn't been back. Never found anything obvious, but something must have been loose is my guess.

Good luck

Mathew

I would say possibly an injector also. They make a very distinct ticking noise that can come and go. My 03 used to get it from time to time. Shortly after I would flog it, the noise would go away. :D They must be self cleaning. :D
