Hello all,

Does anyone know who sells the tie rod puller tool that's listed in the '02 FSM under part #C-3894-A and who the manufacturer of said tool is and the price?I don't want to use a pickle fork 'cause I want to save the seals on the rod ends. I tried my local NAPA and Advance Auto Parts and no go.

Any advice please. I also checked past posts using the search feature and found some stuff on Tie Rods but no tool # or mfg.

Thanks, Phil

The two hammer method I use and have always heard of is different. Definitely use safety glasses if you ever hit two hammers together, the hardened steel has a tendency to fly apart. My way is to take a hammer in each hand and hit both at the same time on opposite sides of the part that the tapered ball joint stud passes though. If you have enough room for a good hit it usually only takes one (well two if you count both hammers:)), the ball joint stud will fly right out because the tapered hole becomes slightly elongated with the hammer blows.

On ball joints that I can't get at easily with two hammers I put the nut back on upside down to protect the threads and castle part of the nut from damage and use a pitman arm puller. After you tighten the bolt on the puller down hit it with a hammer. Never had luck with a two jaw puller, they just slip off. The special puller is just a pitman arm puller with the arm spacing made for that particular joint but a regular pitman puller usually works just fine and is easily availible.

No damage to the rubber with either method. If you really want the special puller SPX Miller probably has it but it will be expendsive.

Two hammer method sounds good

Thanks for the replies.

Do I need to exert any sort of upward pressure on the tie rod threaded end when whacking the knuckle with the hammers,or will it just pop up and out of the socket?
