Hello folks, in addition to my trans problem I'm addressing in another thread, I'm wondering if it is now time for new injectors.

I have a 96 auto trans 12v with 426K miles.
Original injectors. P pump was replaced under dealer warranty at 70K miles with no issues since.

This winter I'm noticing a harder start in the mornings (30 degree)
A little white smoke and rough idle for about 20 seconds and then smooth idle, smoke clears out.
fuel economy is way down at 13-14mpg.
Yes, the fuel heater and grid heater appear to be working.
Im not spewing fuel, system is tight.

I have read some threads indicating that at 250K, we are ready for new injectors. Other threads indicate no issue at 500K.

Im not looking to spend money, but if it is recommended that the injector are used up at 426k, I will spend the money and install them. If so, replace with stock Bosch injectors?

Any thoughts?
I watched a few videos and the change out seems quite straight forward and within my ability.
 
I think you have had a great life from your injectors - there is no sense in pushing the limits. I wouldn't think twice - I would just replace them.

My original injectors had had a bit over 400k when I pulled them. The local Bosch shop will pop test stock injectors for free and they were on the low side of spec. However, so much fuel had been pumped through them that fuel had eroded the holes. I think you will see an increase in mileage and a better running engine with new ones. Rock Auto normally has 180 Bosch injectors for automatics available. It is the 215s they can't seem to keep in stock. In case you haven't read it, a puller for the injectors is easy to fab up. You'll need one of your lugnuts and a short piece of PVC pipe. Cut the PVC to the correct length then install the lugnut on the injector threads. Tightening the nut will pull the injector out.

One of the first and best “bombs” I did with my ‘95 auto was going to a set of the 215’s from a later model manual transmission truck. It’s nothing major but it is a noticeable power increase. On RockAuto, just look at a ‘97 model manual transmission.
 
Piers matched a set of 215’s for my 98 auto at 100k. 310k on them now and still going strong.

they were pop tested within the last 50k. Good to go!
 
Thanks folks, changing to a different inject may be something I would consider. Can you tell me if other changes are needed to upgrade to the 215 injectors, or do I just change out the injectors and im done?
 
Change the injectors and you could be done. However a little bump in timing (15-16) would be good for them or stock injectors. Keep in mind the weakness of a stock auto transmission.
 
I installed the 215's in mine first. As I said, it was a noticeable improvement. Then, I installed some 181 Delivery Valves, a #10 plate, some 3K Governor Springs, and bumped the timing. It really brought the old girl to life and my fuel mileage actually increased. As with any power mod, gauges are a must.

As to the transmission, I tell folks all the time, you just need to realize the 47RH/47RE is "broke" to start with and needs to be "fixed", or built, from the start, ESPECIALLY if you enhance the power of the Cummins. Once you properly build them, they're great and will give you many miles of good service. Building my transmission was the absolute best mod I've done to the truck.
 
BigPappa, I hear ya on the trans, but how does a guy find the "right" shop to build it?
I'm tired of my local shops just rebuilding. I tell every time, please keep in mind this is a diesel engine and I don't mind paying for a stronger torque converter, shift kit or whatever else is needed. I think they put in the absolute cheapest crap they can find in order to maximize profits.

I've yet to find a reputable trans shop. Everyone around here seem to go big for 5-7 years until the word gets around, then they one day are just gone, shut down.
 
Have you checked the ads in the back of the magazine? Where are you? Someone on the forum might be able to give a recommendation.
 
As Gary said, there are transmission builders in the magazine.

I took my transmission to the fellow we used to do our rebuilds at the shop I worked at at the time. He used factory parts and I supplied a Goerend Valve Body, Billet Input Shaft, Billet Band Anchor, and Dave's Triple Disc Torque Converter. My guy had no problems and the transmission's been doing great for the past 200K.

You just have to make SURE they follow Dave's directions. A fellow I know took his transmission to a builder that's well known in our area for doing performance transmission's, sadly, from my recommendation. The builder did not follow Dave's directions, he thought he knew better than Dave, and the fellow has had problems.

If you'll call Goerend, (563)778-2719, they'll recommend one of their builders close to you. Suncoast is a good builder and some folks swear by ATS.
