We went camping over the weekend and I noticed a "hammering" sound when towing uphill, I figured the timing was too far BTDC. Had the timing tool kit and went to work, I had the harmonic balancer marked where the pin went in for doing valve adjustment. After MANY attempts I could not get the timing pin in so I went by the mark and felt slack in the #1 rockers. The plate on the cover calls for 12. 5 BTDC, 4. 2mm lift (1550 CPL). What I found was 6. 2mm lift, well over specs, I set it to 4. 4 mm lift (13. 5 BTDC). At idle it ran real smooth... as soon as I revved it up, no load, in the driveway, I got a cloud of smoke beyond belief as well as stumbling, missing like mad. Bled injectors, no change. had to take it back to where it was on timing!
I have a 230/605 plate, stock position, star wheel towards engine 1 turn or so, AFC tad (1/32") from totally forward position.
I am considering pulling the #1 injector and "feeling" the piston for TDC... . valves closed and trying it all over.
Any ideas? Why did it smoke so bad?
