We went camping over the weekend and I noticed a "hammering" sound when towing uphill, I figured the timing was too far BTDC. Had the timing tool kit and went to work, I had the harmonic balancer marked where the pin went in for doing valve adjustment. After MANY attempts I could not get the timing pin in so I went by the mark and felt slack in the #1 rockers. The plate on the cover calls for 12. 5 BTDC, 4. 2mm lift (1550 CPL). What I found was 6. 2mm lift, well over specs, I set it to 4. 4 mm lift (13. 5 BTDC). At idle it ran real smooth... as soon as I revved it up, no load, in the driveway, I got a cloud of smoke beyond belief as well as stumbling, missing like mad. Bled injectors, no change. had to take it back to where it was on timing!

I have a 230/605 plate, stock position, star wheel towards engine 1 turn or so, AFC tad (1/32") from totally forward position.

I am considering pulling the #1 injector and "feeling" the piston for TDC... . valves closed and trying it all over.

Any ideas? Why did it smoke so bad?

Did you have Amsoil in the engine? Just kidding.

Has the injectoin pump ever been changed to another pump?

Don~

You forgot to disconnect the negative battery terminal!! LOL! You must do that every time you or anyone else looks at it or comes near it. SAFTEY FIRST!! :D :D   :p :p

Gene,

Upped the timing huh? Was this done while you visited your friends at Enterprise?

I need to find someone I can trust around here to adjust my timing (spill port timing preferred). Anybody know a place?

FTR - I think it's the oil :D

got any input

I wish you a Happy New Year Gene, now if you do posses CREDITABLE knowledge with regards to timing please post if you would, do not take it personally when all do not agree with the Amsoil way of thinking. My experience may differ from yours but we are BOTH intitled to share the differences rather than turn a great site into a circus... truce please.

Don, any more ideas with regards to timing? Would ATDC timing cause smoke? Seems it would due to less combustion duration.

Would appreciate some input.

Thanks,

Mike:)
