Use the clay bar system from meguirs first. It's amazing how it pulls the dirt from the surface of a just washed car and there are zero scratches. Then wax with Black Magic. Consumer Reports magazine rates it the best. It's cheap and available at any Kragen, WalMart, K-mart, etc...

I use Meguiers Gold Class in the paste. Makes the truck look like it is wet when I'm done! Love it! Here is an interesting question. From start to finish, how long does it take you guys to detail the outside of your rig? From the time I wash, wax, and do the tires... around 6 hours. That includes metal polish on the mudflaps and step bars.

I use meguiars everything.

For light surface scratches (as well as an excellent way to get water spots off glass) use meguiars #3 machine glaze, or #2 fine cut cleaner. I use them on my boat every year. The only way to do it is with a Rotary buffer though. If you do it by hand, you will spend days and the finish will still be so so. #2 and #3 are the key to a mirror perfect finish. (avoid conventional polishing and rubbing compounds, especially Turtle Wax. They have waxes added in them that give a fake shine when done, yet it will dull after a while. . )

#2 and #2 are a "paintable polish" meaning no residue, or oils to give you a faux finish. What you see is what you get when finished.

Ive used Meguiars #7 yellow carnauba wax, and the finish looked awesome but its to much carnauba for our heat out here. Carnauba melts in the high temps leaving the finish blurry.

I have since used either 3m marine wax or nu finish. they are decent waxes.

All the stuff from griots garage works well, as does zymol and zaino. Pricey though, IMO.

BTW,

Anyone else use the Mr. Clean car wash system? It WORKS!!! It has a filter that leaves the car spotless by sheeting the water off instead of letting it dry with spots. No more chamios or towels, just wash and rinse with the Mr. Clean and go have breakfast. By the time you're done eating, she'll be dry enough to start in with a clay bar before waxing.

Clay bar?

Where can you get the clay bar from? My new '06 could probably use a wipe down with that cuz it has lots of spots in the silver paint that don't seem to come off from just washing it. I would love to see if this clay would pull up all the imperfections I have noticed in my paint. They almost look like tiny rust particles... ... :(

Thanks, Joe

JGheen,

I think those little rust particles you are seeing are the effects of our trucks being shipped by rail, up across the border. I believe its referred to as "Rail Dust. " I have been told that the clay bar will take care of it. I just got my wax kit from Zaino (www.zainostore.com) today and I got the clay bar. I will be using it tomorrow, and will post the results.

I will post tomorrow, as I want to see if this clay bar will take care of the specks in my paint too.

Regards.

Thanks, I am interested to find out.

Those rusty specs you mentioned are exactly what is on the paint. Hopefully the clay pulls that stuff right up.

I use carbrite products, but they can be hard to find if your local distributor doesn't sell retail. These are commercial products. A little pricey, but worth every penny. Check out www.carbrite.com for a list of the products.

I love 3M's products. I just finished buffing mine out and waxing. Used 3M's Finesse IT II & III, as well as their rubbing compound on a few scratch areas. The products go on and come off fairly easily. I've also been using a polymer wax, the same stuff you can buy at the dealer that's supposed to last 5 years. I put it on once a year and the paint always has that soft feeling. I like it better than the carnuba wax's I've used as it seems to last a bit longer

How soon can you wax a new truck? Mine will be here in a couple weeks. I want to be sure to protect it before snows come but not sure how long the paint needs to cure.

I think you can wax right away with modern finishes. Isn't the "wait for the paint to cure" a relic from the past?

Today I waxed my truck with the Zaino Wax System. Man, that stuff is great!

I began by washing my rig with Dawn Hand/Dishwashing Detergent to remove any old wax residue--a must.

I then washed again with the Zaino car wash and used the clay bar to wipe down the entire truck (chrome and all). That clay bar does wonders! I would "grease" the surface with soapy water and then clay the surface and it pulled off old wax, paint overspray (from a krylon paint incident  ), and small particles (rail dust?) in the clear coat.

Then, using the system, I was able to get rid of swirls and very light blemishes. That Zaino stuff is super concentrated. The temp outside today was 60-70 degrees, and the wax coats dried each within an hour.

So, I would definitely recommend the Zaino Wax. And No, I am not a vendor/advertiser, just a satisfied customer. If not for the wax, I would still be satisfied because of the clay bar alone! My paint surface felt kind of gritty in some places, but the clay bar took care of it. Now the truck is smooth as glass and ready for winter.

Although it took nearly all day to clean the rig and do the wax--it is definitely worth it.

Diesel Thunder.

Joe,

I've been using Mothers clay bar and wax for a long time and I'm very happy with the results. The local PepBoys,AutoZone. . etc stocks there wax and there clay bar combo pack goes for around $10

I use the clay bar twice a year and it makes a huge difference,I wax the truck atleast twice a month and the 5 year old paint looks new. .
