Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Timing Adjust ??

Just returned from the diesel garage I'm using. They were to adjust the lashes and, as I've heard suggested here, adjust the time to 15. 5%. They seem to have done a beautiful job on the lashes but say the timing on my 95 is not adjustable. Say they checked with both the dealer and Cummins re timing adjustment. What gives????

Well, Bighammer, any suggestions? I have found many shops thaty work on diesels and not one will adjust the timing on mine. I'll drive to Traverse city for a long weekend if have to

Thanks for the confirmation. I was sure they were in error but... . They had the dealer in town and Cummins Fredericton on their side.

Diesel shops are few arround here. If anyone has a recommendation in Canada anywhere from Montreal east I would certainly appreciat it.

You may have a problem with "won't" instead of "can't" change the timing. It's hard to find a shop that will set the timing to something other than the stock setting because of environmental polution laws.

After you find a new shop for the work you don't want to do, you can do the timing yourself, the tools are about $250. 00 and then you can loan them afterward and it is easy to check and change your timing when you have the tools.



Depending on your truck you will be happy with 16-17* advance.

$250 For the tools is probably cheaper than the job but I don't think I am up to it. Looked at the directions and..... seems like it could get me into trouble. Truck is my only transport and I commute from out of town, eg no buses. Thanks though.

That barring tool is not an absolute necessity if I was to do it over I wouldn't buy the barring tool. After you have done the timing a couple times it goes real fast and it gets easier.

Hey bighammer can you use the injection detecter to adjust timing or just to see were its at easier?

The detector is to check your timing, it is faster than using the dial indicator kit but, you still need the kit to adjust the timing as the timing is adjudted using the lift of the cam in the pump. At the minamum you will need a metric dial indicator, a way to hold the indicator and the special delivery valve socket, a steering wheel puller will pull the gear.
