Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Timing Adjustment

Is there any tips or tricks on setting timing on my 96 5-speed with p-7100 pump? I just purchased a Snap-On timing kit and was thinking about tackling the job myself.

the shop manual is a great guide to timing. the timing pin in back of the cam gear is a pain to use. The most accurate way to get TDC is to put a depth micrometer in #1 injector hole. U should really check the manual before starting the job. Oh make sure the pump gear is Perfectly clean and free of oil, cause it will slip if not, good luck!

Hey FOX, how much was the kit?? And do you have to pull the gear cover and gear to time it?? Sounds like a PITA, but mine needs timing bad.

u don't have to pull the cover, but it is best to, U can go through the oil filler hole in the cover if u don't want to pull cover. Just grab the oil fill and turn counterclockwise.

Is there any step by step instructions anywhere besides a shop manual, that i can print off with my computer? I am still trying to decide to tackle this job myself? I just want to make sure i get it done right the first time,and not mess up anything by my stupidity.

I know Piers uses a timing light to set his, much easier. Anyone know anything about this setup? Does it cost a small fortune?

I talked to the guy that overhauled my pump, and he said they timmed it with a light also. He said that is how they do all of um.

I'm not sure, but I think the timing light is just to see where it's set, and not actually setting it.



From what I've heard, it sounds like a standard light. The pickup is the fancy expensive part. It senses the high pressure pulses of fuel thru the fuel lines.



Since there are no marks on the flywheel, it must be accurately marked (maybe a magnetic scale?)

I also have the Snap-On set of tools comming this week. I can't figure out yet if the gear I. D. and the shaft can be properly cleaned without removing the cover. I hate to remove it, but I have read that the shaft and gear must be cleaned and dry before resetting.

He's been a diesel mechanic for a while so it just comes naturally to him I guess. We had mine done in like an Hour and 1/2 or a little more, but that was with a lot of talking in there too! And we didn't pull the cover, just pulled the oil spout off.



Helpful Hint: Make sure to re-install your oil cap!!



Open the hood like a week and 1/2 AFTER Doug did my timing to put my Grover in a temperary spot for a big Mud Run in Layfayette Tennessee that I was pulling my cousins truck too. First thing my cousin says is "Where is your oil cap?":--) :--) :--)



NO BODY had one and it was a Saturday! Oh well I ran without for a week and 1/2 I can do it for another day. Got another oil cap on Tuesday cause the stealer had to order it! $4
