Timing advance fun and excitement

Maybe not exactly 'Fun and Exciting', but I had noticed that the exhaust smelled 'rich' even after the engine was warm and idling. Also there was this noise, almost like a light knock, that could be heard under light load. Advanced the timing a bit (moved the lines 1/16" more apart) and the noise is gone, the exhaust smells 'right'. It just seems to run (and sound) a lot better. Have to get a dial indicator now and really play with it.

I have the dial indicater for the pump timing if you want to borrow it. I have the snapon dodge cummins tool kit. Every thing but the photo tach.

Umm..... this may be a stupid question, but why do you need the photo tach ot set the statice timing?

Now you gone and done it; sounds like the bug has bit you hard. Just be careful to not go to far. You'll know when you hit that point- you'll start to sound like a cold 6. 9 and run like one too. But you have a way to go til you hit that point.
