:) Thanks Mel for the tip on the timing mehtod you use. My thought was that it would ruin the gasket when slid back, but if you can use silicone on it, I'll try it. Does the gear come completely out of the housing when you do this so if the gasket tears, a fellow can make a new one? Thanks Mel! Tim
 
Mel, since you've done this successfully more than once this may not be needed, but, be real careful when working on or dissassembling the vacuum pump/ps pump. Proper alignment is really critical. If it's out of wack the smallest bit, you can cause lots of grief with the ps pump. I watched my brother go thru 9 ps pumps all because of invisible damge to the vacuum pump.

The Vac/PS Pump Assy on mine moves back at least 4 inches clearing the accessory drive housing by a couple of inches, but

the range of movement is dependent on PS hose lengths and

orientation, so each truck may vary a little. This gasket is approximately 1/8"-3/16" thick and seems very durable, but would be very easy to fabricate and form out of intake gasket sheet stock. On a 2wd pickup, the Vac/PS Assy end support

bolts are quick and easy to remove from underneath. It is only with this Assy out of the way that our timing pin might occasionally serve some useful purpose.

Thanks for the heads up warning about Vac/PS pump alignment.

So far, I have always moved the complete assy to get it out

of the way, and haven't had any problem with it as a result. Am

I correct to assume that the critical alignment causing your brother grief is between the Vac and PS pumps?

Yes, the primary concern would be the alignment of the two. I wonder if repeated removal and installation would cause any bearing damage or something similar as the ps pump is driven by the vacuum pump. If it has any play or is out of tolerance, even a bit, it can cause progressive damage to the ps pump, and neither is cheap... .

This was just as a caution, especially since our trucks are "getting on in years" so to speak and parts are getting harder and harder to find.



Just a thought to put out there...
