which feed pump?

Is the Edge EZ,Comp,Juice or Diablo Power Puck safe on the high output engines (eth). I remember seing a post a while back that the timing boxes on the market were hard on the head gaskets on the eth engines due to the higher compression. I have a buddy with the H. O. that is looking for a safe box to put on his truck. He tows with the truck & would like a little better fuel mileage with added power but he doesnt want an agressive timing box that will increase cylinder pressures to unsafe levels. He already has rv275 injectors installed. I thought about the smarty & running on the non timing programs but that probably wont help his mileage much. Is the timing on the smarty real agressive or could he get away with it. Maybe i should look at the TST box. Whats your thought?

Kurt,

I also have the 2001 HO with an Edge Comp (no injectors... yet). I did not notice any increase in fuel mileage after installing the Comp. When I installed the Comp, the only thing I had done different to the engine was a K&N filter in the stock air box. The only thing I noticed was my exhaust temps were about 100-200 degrees higher on average during normal cruising speeds. I ran the box on 3x3 for 45,000 miles until the clutch gave out. When I had my new clutch was installed, I also had a new 4 inch exhaust installed and cranked the Comp up to 5x5. Still no change in mileage. Next I added the AFE Stage II CAI. My temps have dropped but I still haven't seen any increase in mileage. Of course, winter temps aren't helping any.

I tow some, maybe 5-10% of the time, usually at 9,000 pounds (trailer plus 2 horses) with no problems.

To sum it up, the engine has had no problems. I am now looking to install injectors, probably next spring.

i ran an EZ box with RV275 injectors for at LEAST 18ok miles with no adverse effects..... i still have the EZ that i pulled from my '01 HO before trading..... hoping to get $200 for it tailgating... ... tom;)

The EZ had been a culprit of too much timing for some HO trucks in the past, it seemed to vary from truck to truck but some experienced increased engine vibration & combustion clatter under load. I tried an EZ on my '01 HO with DD2 injectors and didn't like it, the engine rattled like it was cold when it was warmed up. The power curve was too abrupt as well. I also tried a Puck, definitely smoother & quieter. The box I liked the best was the original 1999-vintage van Aaken. . . it didn't give a bunch of power nor did it have a boost fooler but it made up for it with smoothness & linear power delivery. If I still had the '01 there's a good chance I'd have an old vA on it.

Same here... . I dont run a timing box at all. The truck doesnt sound right with one. I dont want to take the chance blowing the Head Gasket. There are plenty of other non timing boxes out there that are better than the comp IMHO.

There are also boxes like the smarty and quad xzt+ that you can select the programs you want. I too have heard the horror storys of guys running timing boxes and blowing the HG within minutes of install... I am making 400+ hp soon to be 500+hp with no timing so I dont see the need.

Smarty is a good way to go. The timing gets progressively more aggressive as you program higher software levels. Want less, choose a lower number, want more, go higher. Works well. You mentioned the TST box. It's not a timing box, just fueling. Use it with the Smarty and you have a great combo.

I have a 2001 HO with 275's and have been running an Edge Comp Stacked on a Smarty. I have over 202,000 now with no problems so far. In fairness though, I don't abuse the abilities and potentials that I have with this set up.
