I am looking at a 97 3500 where I assume the pin fell out as the timing cover is cracked and leaks oil. engine seems to still run fine. The cover costs 350. 00 and would like to know if there are any cheaper places to purchase this cover.

I have not made an offer on the truck yet, and since the engine runs ok, would there be any other damage that I should consider? like the timing gears?

this can still be fixed without removal of the engine, although not and easy job. Is that correct? Greg

GMichaels,

Are you referring to the sheet metal cover or the gear case? If the KDP truly fell out and only cracked the cover, the owner is extremely fortunate. They almost always crack the case.

I can't imagine the cover is $350, except maybe from the dealer. Contact a Cummins shop. They ought to be able to supply it for much less.

As to the repair, the cover can be replaced by simply removing the vibration damper, fan and hub, and oil fill tube. If its the case, that's much more work (bumper, radiator and intercooler, vacuum and injection pumps, lift pump, cam, etc. ). But either way, the engine stays in.

You would probably want to see what happened behind that cover if the pin did fall out. Offer to help him replace it so you can see what's behind. Then make an offer if you're still inclined.

case not cover

My poor choice of words it is the case that is cracked not the cover. which now I remember you need to pull the cam and pumps.
