I don't know anyone who's put them on the scope to see how much timing is added.
Moreover, the 24V trucks do not have constant timing. The ECM varies based on APPS, MAP and a bunch of other inputs. For example, timing at steady cruise is MUCH more advanced than under maximum load.
I think the ECM varies timing by as much as 8 degrees. I don't remember where that number came from.
You might want to try to PM user MARCO-- he's about the most knowledgeable on here about the ECM and how it affects/controls the VP44.
The Cummins can "handle" a lot of timing... some of the pullers are nearing 30degrees!. A street-driven truck should be not even half of that.
Because the ECM varies timing with varying conditions, the Edge boxes tend to also have a varying amount of timing. If I am remembering right, the Edges will let the ECM advance timing when it normally would (and even add additional advance) but they limit how far they will let the ECM back off the timing.
That's why I discourage the use of the EZ on ETH engines when combined with monsters injectors and especially drugs (NOS, propane, etc). The HUGE peak cylinder pressures that result from the advanced timing will take out a headgasket pretty quick, and the ETH is more vulnerable because it has a bit more compression (17:1 vs 16. 4:1)
