I'm going to replace the timing gear cover on my truck Saturday. The Cummins spec calls for a silicone sealant type gasket, however; a regular gasket is available (p/n 3918673). I've never been too good at applying silicone as a gasket maker especially on something as large as the timing cover. I'm just wondering if the regular type gasket is sufficient to do the job , i. e. longivity & no leaks. As all of you know, Cummins went to the silicone gasket maker on the later second generation trucks so there must have been a reason for the change - perhaps costs. Anyway I would appreciate any thoughts on this.

I'd use the clear rtv adheasive sealant, it works great. Permatex is what I've used. I've never heard anything good about the gasket.

The 12 valves use a gasket plus silicone on both sides. Either way you do it, you better use the RTV or it will probably leak. I like the pressurized stuff as its easy to make a nice bead. Its a bit spendy but sure is handy.

check the bolts on the inside of the case 5 i think ive ever seen ones that was not tight. and acouple of them are a pickle to get to.
