I'm going to replace the timing gear cover on my truck Saturday. The Cummins spec calls for a silicone sealant type gasket, however; a regular gasket is available (p/n 3918673). I've never been too good at applying silicone as a gasket maker especially on something as large as the timing cover. I'm just wondering if the regular type gasket is sufficient to do the job , i. e. longivity & no leaks. As all of you know, Cummins went to the silicone gasket maker on the later second generation trucks so there must have been a reason for the change - perhaps costs. Anyway I would appreciate any thoughts on this.
