Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Timing how tos

I want to get my timing advanced. I am going to get a local guy that is currently working on my cummins (KDP... ouch!!) to time it for me. Is there any directions I can print out to give him? What should I get it set at? I am thinking 24 -28 degrees. My friend who has the same set up as me except w/ pump work is running near 40 degrees.

40 degrees sounds a little high to me, but I am no expert. 15 to 16 degrees is pretty common from what I've heard. I guess it depends on what you want to do with it.

IMO you cant run 40* on stock compression w/out problems.

With stock RPM you are probably better off with 16°.



If you had governor springs I would say 20°. Actually even 20° with GSK sucks. Your hp peak will be in the 3k RPM range and you suffer in the low rpm driveability.

I hard a high RPM miss around 3400 after I put in my 4000GSK

kept bumping the pump alittle take a spin after the 3or 4th time

this truck was really starting to wake up getting all over the road in 3rd gear w/35" BFG A-T was fun but came home smoking

well steaming it was the headgasket so while I had the head off I found TDC & found the timing to be 33degrees it sure sounded nice tho. So now I'm runnin 16 & bein safe.

Do you have a lift w/ those 35" tires? What gear ratio do you have? I have my head o-ringed so headgaskets should not be a problem.

No lift,but have rims w/5" backspace w/4. 10 gears these tires really help om the eway

i have never followed the high reving diesel thought process

Very interesting reading, re: timing specs... . just wondering what my stock 96' auto is set for from the factory? The decal says 195 on the side of engine, is that HP?
