Whats the best timing for the mods i want to put in? I'm going to put in a #6 plate, 4k gsk, 370 hp injectors, 16 cfm turbo, i already have the after market exhaust and airbox. I hear you don't want to time the pump above 15 w/o head studs. I was thinking in the range of 14. 5*, but i honestly don't know enough and am new to this pump.

hey guys, whats the chatter about running 15. 5-16deg with stock head bolts???

is its really safe to advance that far on stock headstuds???

I want to turn up my '98 12v a little.

From what i read in here, its fine to go 16 deg with stock head, i went with 15. 5* and put the plate all the way forward. truck is running like a champ. puts you back in your seat now, 40 lbs of boost out of the stock turbo tho, kind of scary. plan on puting in a 16 cm turbo anyways. I no longer plan on putting in the #6 plate, its not going to be necessary after turbo and injectors.

You should be fine but to be safe you might want to consider re-torquing the head bolts. I know if I were in your place I would. I would pull each bolt one at a time, clean, lube and torque to spec. 89+ 90 deg. on the long rocker pedestal ones and 66 ft. lb+ 90 deg. for the all the rest.

I have run 16 deg for a long time. I run a home ground #5ish plate in stock position. I finally blew the OE gasket at 247k miles. I was towing early one morning up in MT with sub zero temps and strong crosswinds and got my boost up to 38 a few times by accident (was trying to keep below 35). I went on up to Calgary, AB, delivered my load and came home to UT while keeping my boost under 20 and did fine. It all depends on how good your surfaces are and how tight the bolts are as to what it will take. I put mine back together with studs.

I blew the replacement gasket at 262k but in ND this time and headed to the same place of all things. The reason was I didn't retorque the studs enough times. Now at 402k miles all is well.

You must still be running the stock plate if you are running it full forward. I can't go past center with my 10 and control egt's while towing.

yeah stock plate, egt's are peaking at 1350, trying to keep them under 1300, under 35 psi i only run 900-1100 but once the turbo goes above 35 its pure heat and jumps up really quick. i went all highway today at 65 mph, 2000 rpm, 600 degrees, 5 psi, and got 22 mpg. as long as i'm not hodroding it, its doing the trick for now. can't use all my power till i cool down with a bigger turbo and aftermarket intercooler.

With my setup towing I can stay below 1200* easily. Don't like the idea of 1300*. Maybe just for a few seconds is all.

It'll peak at 1350 if my foots all the way through the floor board, it only hits that temp for 1 second, its not safe to run at those temps for extended periods of time. I'm looking into an aftermarket turbo to work with the fuel i've got going to it.

I timed my truck at 20* over the stock with an aurora 3000 turbo from ATS and with my head studded I make 45 to 50 PSI of boost and the egts run at 850 degrees running 70mph down the highway. Truck will break the tires loose off the line. I don't run a fuel plate and my governer springs are cranked down. Truck is phenominal. But you need to have the transmission to back it up. Amaizing tho. That is a dually 4wd with 4:10's in the rear and a locker.
