I recently purchased a set of tools to set my own valves. I downloaded a set of instructions from the net. It says something about a timing pin to insert for #1 cylinder on compression. I have a '92 CTD and can't find the timing pin. Does it have one? If so where is it at? Thanks... .
The timing pin is located on the back of the front cover just below the injector pump, it's rather close to the block. The engine barring tool goes through a hole in the flange at the back of the block and engages the ring gear. See the instructions below.
Hey bud, the timing pin is real hard to see, just feel back there and you will feel the end of the pin. Be prepared for it not to move freely. My 92 was reall stuck. Just keep pushing and pulling slowly with wd 40 and it will move! Remember that it is on the back timing cover case for feeling purposes. Good luck. Tim
Its easier for me to remove the vacum/power steering pump to get to the timing pin(I marked the H balancer @TDC when I replaced my injectors, because my timing pin is really hard to move even when you can get at it) and to get to two of the injector pump mounting nuts. I take out two 5/8ths bolts and move the vac/PS pump about 5" towards the cab before the hoses stop me. I was struggling to get my injector pump out in the parking lot of Midwest Diesel injection service when it dawned on me how much easier it would be to get to the injection pump with the v/Ps pump(s) out of my way. What a difference! I smeared a thin coat of ultra black silicone on both sides of the old v/PS gasket when I reinstalled it & so far 30K with no oil leaks.
