I was trying to advance the timing on my truck today and could not get the timing pin to go in the back of the cam. I tried for three hours to get that pin in. Needless to say I got mad and put it back together. anybody have a answer why I could'nt get the pin in?

Did you first pull it out and A. ) verify it still has the little nub on the front and B. ) take the o-ring off so it would slide in and out easier? Not to worry, most of the time it is not that accurate anyway. To find TDC for timing there are much more accurate procedures.

Spray the area swith penetrating oil a few day ahead too loosen the pin. If it is sliding back and forth easily, then the end may be broke off. You can remove injector #1 and insert a pin in the hole to find TDC, now mark the balancer pulley for furture reference.

Remove the charge air pipe. Loosen the clamp at the innercooler then zip out the six intake manifold bolts (four, one then the dipstick tube bolt), lift it off as an assy. Cover innercooler opening and place a rag over the heater grid on the intake.

Remove the cover (plug that looks like the head of a bolt) for the timing pin on the injection pump, catch 1/2 qt. +/- of engine oil with funnel to drain pan etc. Remove injec. pump timing pin.

Bar engine and watch for the tang to align with the inject. pump window (plug you removed), a small inspection mirror is helpful. The tang will look like the business end of a small flat screwdriver bit pointing towards you.

Then back up the engine, bar it clockwise as reviewed from the front slowly and just before the pump timing pin would engage; the pin on the gear housing should fall into the hole in the back of the cam gear (providing both are in factory spec. )

The plastic pin tip gets sheared frequently, as others have explained. I've used a small drill bit that's really sharp to prick the mass left in the cam gear then spin it out (drill bit held by hand or with pliers). I think a tech. @ Diesel Dyn. once recommended heating the bit to pierce the plastic and it cools in a flash and now you have a "handle" to remove it. .

I've found a 12pt. , 1/2" deep 3/8" drive socket works well to press the star washer back onto the timing pin holder (you might need to work the washer over with the needle nose pliers).

You can refill the injection pump with clean engine oil when you are done thru the plug in the afc or by removal of the afc housing and pouring directly into the gov. housing.

Good luck and don't get frustrated, you'll get it.

I pulled out the timing pin and it has about 1/8 in long tip on the end. I was wanting to find out where the timing was set first because the dealer replaced the pump before the warranty ran out. I had to take it back once because it was way off.

I will try your suggestions and try again thanks.
