Did a dumb thing today. Sheared the damn timing pin off. I got in a hurry while trying to time the pump. Anyways, what to do. I will have to get a new pin on Monday. Whats the next best way to find TDC?? Also, should I be concerned about the tip of the pin that sheared off being in the gear case?? Will the new pin push it though the gear or will I have to fish it out of the cam gear so the new pin will insert correctly. Dayum, I hate when things like this happen. One step forward three steps back. . UHHGGGG!!!!!!

The dropped valve method (search this forum for details) or a dial indicator in an injector hole are more accurate than the timing pin and not as big a PITA.

Should I worry about the timing pin tip broken off in the cam gear or just leave it ad not worry about it??? I cant see how its possible to get out of the cam gear?? Thanks for the other 2 methods I'll try those.

Thanks

I don't think I would worry about the end of the timing pin. It's plastic so the hard steel gears should not be affected if it does manage to get in the works.

When you put the new pin in don't put the retainer clip in, the pin will hold in without it. I did this on mine and it makes finding tdc easier. The pin will move more freely or you can use your finger in the hole even. The barring tool moves the engine slow enough.

Thans for the help guys. I got the pump timed using the drop valve method. This took some extra time but for future refrence it is well worth it. I also got the tip out of the cam gear by heating up a small screwdriver and burning it into the broken off plastic tip and pulling it out. I reinstalled the broken off timing pin as I will never need to use it again.

Thanks!!

TDC mark on damper

I was disappointed to find that my hard won TDC mark on the damper was rendered useless when I removed the damper to replace the front seal. There is no key and quite a bit of slop when you loosen the four bolts that mount it to the crankshaft. When I reinstalled the damper I removed all the slop in one direction so that future removes will not cause the lose of the TDC reference.
