Timing pin is under the injection pump. The only problem Ive heard of with it is someone not pulling it out then barring or starting the engine and it breaking off in the gear.
Im thinking your talking about the Dowel pin problem? If so its known as the KDP or Killer dowel pin and it is a locating pin in the timing case that can and will work its way out and nicely bust a hole in the case below the water pump. Its real important to have it fixed, and can be done by 2 methods, tab it or pin it with a jig.
