All, I had my timing advanced here recently, and now I have large amounts of white smoke upon startup when cold. Exhaust will also turn white while idling for only a few minutes, once egt's go up white smoke ceases. . also my engine seems to miss when first started cold... Grids are working, new fuel return line. Truck is 215 hp 12 valve stock plate foward w/370 inj. Will overly advanced timing cause symtoms like I describe? Also engine seems much noisier when I get into the loud peddle.

Thanks.

What was the timing set at and it is possible it could have slipped if the gear was not tourqed to the new specs, I would also check the valves for the extra noise.

I had my timing reset to 18 deeg and I noticed right at startup after the timing was set that the engine ran louder. I am attributing this to more fuel going into the cylinders on each stroke. I also have white smoke at startup when it is cold out but after about 3 minutes of driving it goes away and does not happen again until the engine gets cold again. I also have a knock sound at all rpms I think it might be a faulty injector or something is clogged a little. It does it worse when it is cold out. When it is nice and warm the sound goes away alittle. This sound was there before the timing was advanced but not as loud. Any help would be apprecieated with the sound problem.

Thanks,

Doug

Same thing

I just did the same thing recently. I have 150,000 on the truck. . and I noticed it was haveing a harder time starting, and mileage was down. I thought maybe the injectors were getting plugged, so I put in the 370's. I took it to my guy at cummings after installing the injectors so he could tune it better. With the 370's in it smokes white like that at idle (esp cold) but goes away while driving or higher in the rpm. He said it was getting too much fuel at idle. The only right way to fix it was to have the pump re-calibraited in the idle circuit. The 370's are just putting too much fuel in at idle. He also advanced the pump timming, which helped a little. Yes it makes more noise now (rattle) but that is from the timming being more aggressive. The star wheel is backed off a long ways(which helps a little) otherwise it would smokem all out behind me! I backed it off till I had just a little puff when I get on it.

Good luck

Cal

New plate and turbo in the spring. Don't need it or want it in the snow!

White smoke at idle with 370s is not a bad thing but white smoke at idle without 370s isnt a good thing and it usually it has something to do with timing or bad fuel filter or bad injectors or air in the system.
