I am planning on setting my timeing this weekend. Where is the best place to get the tools needed?. And what should I set it at?

Piers has the best deal going for a delivery valve socket... . you'll need this to take the DV holder out so that you can measure plunger lift with a dial indicator.

Bear in mind that these tools are not as easily accessible as gasser tools, and you can't get 'em at NAPA.

You'll need the DV socket, dial indicator with a long nose that reads in metric, chart for plunger lift VS. degrees of timing, torque wrench capable of at least 85ft. /lbs. , 15mm socket to take off #1 valve cover (to verify TDC), patience, 3/4" socket to take off that stupid valve cover COVER, 3/4" open end wrench for injector line, 8mm socket for removing injector line holder thingies, little magnet to remove DV assembly, and a new DV holder o-ring... just in case.

This list is non-linear..... the order I listed stuff is NOT the order you'll need 'em.

I might have forgot something... . but this is a basic list of stuff you need.

I just did mine and Got Smoke's using the indicator method. I bought the barring tool and delivery valve socket from OTC, about $30. 00 each. I bought the indicator adapter to screw in the pump from Snap - on, $18. The Snap On indicator to fit the adapter is $150. 00 I had a machine shop drill out the adapter to fit a standard indicator, 2 inch travel and it saved me $150, since I already had the indicator. The Haynes manual has a good summary of how to do it with some helpful pointers too. We used the cam timing pin to get TDC, and left the valve covers on.

Doug might I add thank you Again! I just filled the white beast back up yesterday. With the timing done right about 3/4's full on this tank and me babying it almost all the way to between 1/2 and 1/4 left I mangaed 18. 6 MPG. That's somewhere in the neighborhood of 1. 5mpg better!:D I still need to figure out how to do the math to find out my correct mileage seeing as I have the over size tires.

This tank will probably only be 18 though:rolleyes: ... ... I'm getting tired of babying it!Oo. :D

For the $$ you spent on all those tools and the time/effort it took to round 'em up... . you could have bought the whole kit from Snap-On for less $$.

Just an observation... not a flame.

HoleShotHolset,

I checked with the cummins stealer and the timing kit was over 600 dollars. If you could the number for the complete timing kit it would really help. I had mine timed at the dealers to 15 degrees. I haven't noticed any difference in milage from 13. 5 degrees. I am thinking that I want to take the Piers cam back out and put a stock back in. It didn't do what I wanted it to do. If I do that I will need to retime.

Thanks.
