Another One Bites The Dust

I have a couple questions about timing the pump. I seen some people talk about timing the pump with the "plunger" and I was wondering how this was done and what has to be done to do this. my second question is what kinda caliper has to be used to do this. I have a multitude of calipers and depth gages at my disposal.

Thanks

David

To set the pump timing using this method you need a dial indicator. The plug on the rear of the pump is removed and the dial indicator is screwed in and used to measure the plunger lift BTDC. I don't know all of the specifics of this method because I used the 1/8" rotation method to advance my timing. Hope this helps a bit.

Hey David,

I'm about to dive into this myself in a week or two. The method as described in the factory service manual (a must have as far as I'm concerned) goes something like this.

1. Locate TDC using timing pin

2. Disengage timing pin

3. Remove plug & copper washer from rear of pump

4. Install gauge holder & Gauge (may be neccessary to remove one or more fuel lines to install gauge)

5. Use barring tool to rotate engine in oppisite engine direction until dial stops

6. Zero dial and rotate engine in normal direction back to TDC (use pin to locate)

7. Normal timing is 1. 25mm lift

8. Lossen pump bolts and rotate pump to desired timing lift

9. Tighten pump bolts to 18 ft. lbs.

10. Remove gauge and reassemble

I read someone was able to do it with a dial indicatior and a magnetic base. I think with a little ingenuity it can be done. That's what I'm goint to try. If need be I'll machine a gauge holder.

If you do it that way, remember that 1. 25mm lift is stock setting.

If you plan to uprate your fueling and put in new injectors at some point, or if you want better throttle reponse, lower EGT's (maybe 50*F) and quicker pick up then set it to 1. 45-1. 5mm lift.

The most common is 1. 45mm

Also mark check the mark on the pump itself, and the gear housing. The lines should be matched, then, when your done, make a new mark where the pump sitting and report on how far apart the two marks are.

I ask because it seems the most common measurement is almost exactly 1/8".
