I posted on this a while back and thought that I/we figured it out with the change of my MAP sensor. BUT, the smoke is back and worse than ever. Along with it the timing rattle seems to have gotten worse. 3 weeks ago I made 5K round to Indy and then SW Mich to visit the wifes and then my parents, Was hesitant to take this truck but it's easier on my 4 yr old than the 2000, So, over dosed the tank with power service and off we went. A triple shot of PS seemed to help the smoke, but the rattle was working on me. . Stopped at Scheids in Lafayette to pick up parts for another little project ;) and asked Les what he thought, comments where take off the Banks and the rattle will stop. Figured I would try it when we got home. On the way home between Winslow and Flag the CEL comes on and I ease into Flag and check codes, had 2, engine over speed and crank sensor. I disconnect the Banks in a Dennys parking lot thinking that will remedy everything. It did not to say the least. I still have the rattle and the smoke is now back. I changed out my Crank sensor today NO change. . New MAP is on order. . WTF?? Could this be REALLY carboned injectors? I do not think so as I run the guts out of my pickup every day... I will run the rack in the morning, but the rattle is NOT a valve train type rattle, it comes on during exceleration. Sounds Just like a gasser "ping" detonation. I am leaning towards injectors and/or CP3 gone/going bad. . ??? Just looking for thoughts and suggestions, as I have still not got my head "wrapped around" the CR system yet.

P. S. I am NOT making oil, and the smoke is BLACK not grey with NO haze at cruise but massive smoke for a "stock" truck during exceluration. Last week it started to stumble and hicup like its wearing a VP 44. The 2 micron filter setup has been on just since getting home(2 weeks)

TIA David

Have you checked your rail pressure? From the descriptions of others, the rail pressure relief valve may not be holding. Might want to run it with a DRB on it and see what pressure are demanded and what you are getting. With the rattle and smoke it sounds like the ECU is trying to compensate or the relief valve may just be screwing up the injection events. Another thing to try. Good luck. :)

I did the relief valve visual test... ie, pull return line and raise rpms ... no leakage. Also for the last week anytime I run above 2600rpms the rail seems to hold pressure and the rpms will not drop down for 3 to 4 SECONDS after letting of the throttle. the closer to red line I take it the longer it holds steady. This is annoying to say the least when running thru the gears. What I am wondering is if this could be a symtom of dirty fuel and worn pump and injectors, even at 60K or if I have a electrical glitch to sort out???
