I have been wondering the exact same thing. I know someone a while back posted a link to a chart showing optimium timing for 12 and 24 valve engines and I am not sure if it listed common rails or not. I will try to find that link.

there are alot of things that make timing "optimal"

dyno is the best way to tell, but i dont have one unfortunatley... it would be interesting to play with the static timing on a cr and see where that puts you after programmers etc.

Yes, too much timing can cause problems. Execessive advanced timing tends toward higher peak pressure rise. Not sure about our 5. 9s, but the generally accepted value is to stay below 10 bar/degree pressure rise for engine longevity. I know that doesn't help much without having a "timing sensor" or pressure transducer.

I would be curious if someone could put some thoughts together on how total timing may be measured. I know TST has an adjustable timing feature, but from what I understand, it adds a certain number of degrees to the existing timing, and is not used to set timing in an absolute sense. --Eric

I remember reading on here not long ago about excessive timing causing cracked pistons... or are we talking about timing on something else??

The question I have then is a device such as the Smarty or TST that advances timing safe just with reguards to timing advancement? I am not talking about stacking. Some have reported they are hearing timing rattle with the newest software on the Smarty. Is this too much to jeapordize reliability and longevity of the engine?

This is a question that has weighed heavy on my mine. I want to set up the CR timing for good performance and mileage without sacrificing longevity/reliability. The aftermarket sometimes considers their timing changes proprietary. Fair enough, but it makes it tough for us consumers to evaluate what product suits our needs. I have real concerns about Smarty's timing as it can cause rattle. If one wants to play with it themselves, then the TST is the only real option. But the real question is: How much advance to too much?

its def timing rattle... my 3rd gen has never rattled with my smarty, on with the tst

i know by doing the DIY tone wheel mod you can advanve static timing up to 3*, so ive read. but all the DL's and boxes change the dynamic timing

I have the latest TST box and it will timing rattle in the mornings when its cold, so I tend to be easier on the right foot until it comes up to operating temperature, then it never rattles, only when cold. I also keep it in auto mode and 12 deg max advance, I would only try 15 or 18 if on a dyno to find optimum timing, just my 2c... ... ...
