Just wondering where would be the best place to get a set of timing tools for my 96 12 valve. Also, if you all know maybe what the price would be on a set of these.

I bought a Ferret Instruments # 765 diesel pulse detector for a using a timing light. I haven't gotten to play around with it yet, but I'm hoping to get it all figured out. (got it in my head, just need to try it) Price was not bad really since I already own a timing light. Pretty comarable to buying the SnapOn kit.

Advantages are that you can check the timing without getting too far into it. If it's on you leave it alone. Also there are no charts because you are setting actual degrees. You are not opening up the fuel system so you don't need a DV socket, won't stink like diesel, or have to bleed or prime anything.

Of course it's JMO, but I thought I'd throw this out there

bighammer, be interested in how it does for you as I have considered buying the same one. Can't really justify buying a diesel only timing light for $500+

i got mine from miller exp

i got everthing from miller and it is good stuff except i would not buy their dial indicator it's 80. 00 and i think that is too muck for a tool that you can get for a lot cheaper.

When I first got it I wanted to see how it worked. The first attempts at getting a signal were sort of hit and miss. Clamping the piezo adapter on the line was very touchy. Too tight or too loose, and I got no signal. Talking to Cooker last night, he suggested clamping closer to the pump. (I had it close to the injector) On a warmer day I'll play with it some more.

Just had a thought (didn't hurt--Really :D ) that once TDC is marked on the harmonic balancer, could it be transfered to other trucks (ie: template?) since it's keyed to the crank?

Just a thought, not necessarily a good one. Any sharper guys have thoughts on this or am I just nuts?

BTW, anoter advantage of the pulse adapter is that it could also be used for 1st gen trucks assuming they are also 1/4" lines.

spx miller

these are the part numbers for the miller tools. mlr-6842 indicator adapter $26. 97,mlr-6843A indicator tip $10. 09,mlr-6862 washer and bearing set $11. 12,mlr-6840 pump valve socket $41. 53. the dial indicator i would buy somewhere else like summit or your local tool dealer, it would be easier if you got one in metric but not mandatory just do a conversion from standard to metric. the dial indicator they sell looks good and works well it's also $80. 00. thats alot for a little much. the phone # 800-801-5420 i hope this helps.

Pulse detector

I've been using a Snap-On MT-257 Pulse Detector since it came out 15+ yrs. ago. Really works good w/ degreable timining light. Just need a TDC mark on VB or flywheel. Make sure you emery off the paint on the inj. line next to inj. I use set timing on my engine and got strong accurate signals, then used on customers truck, same year and everything, couldn't get acccurate signal for dogs--t. I even took the clamps off inj. lines thinking pulse is transferring from one line to next, didn,t make any diff. I like the degreeable timing light, digital w/ tach, cause when I get accurate tach RPM as dash tach I will get good timing signal. Some of the engines I couldn't get good signal the inj. weren't cracking at the right. I've got to check my customers inj. when he brings it back. If the inj. don't chatter or squeal strong you won't get a good pulse to trigger timing light. Cat PC engines that have lower pressure inj. systems I have hard time getting good pulse until new nozzles are put in. Good luck with the new toy.
