Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Timing

Gonna check my timing tomorrow and just curious if you need the thrust washers and the bearing setup that the manual calls for??? I did it with the gear cover off last time (kdp) but now I'm gonna do it with the cover on and I was curious if you need that setup to keep the shaft from turning wile tightening the nut?? Or can I just be careful??

We (WaynesWorld and I) never used the bearing, when we did the timing on my truck.

thrust washer? bearing? nothing like that came in my timing kit, i've done it once with the cover off and once with it on and had no problems, i gave up after about 10 minutes the first time trying to get that damn lock pin to move but that didn't seem to be a problem
